Thought about Vararam, but from what I've read an heard first hand,,its a bee arch to install an line up...and most of the benefits would be realized on the top end at speed...but like I said ,,I'm new at this so...think I'll follow your advice and attend to the seat of my pants an motor on...preciate the kind words

I am not sure why, but on this forum Breathless-Performance is some sort of dirty word. My C5 Coupe is the third Vette I have owned with their CAI system and I absolutely love it. The installation is a breeze. Maintenance of it as easy as ever, it looks good (gives you choices of clear, black or carbon fiber) and it really works. Best of all, it is not all that expensive. It is a win/win/win/win for me. Check them out.

I would go with the callaway or the vararam intake as both are great setup's...the problem most exp. with installing the vararam is the fast it's a tight area to work around, I found that my vararam in my 03 z06 was pretty easy and straight forward, what took me forever was the fact I was cleaning while I was in there..go with the vararam and forget about it!

Vararam is difficult for some and easy for others. I thought it was easy. Follow the directions. Either way, I believe that they are worth it.

When you say "top end at speed" I'll say that when I installed mine on my 99 I drove about 5 miles down the freeway from my best friends house (where I had just done the install) and had a chance to drop it into 3rd and punch it. 75-120 was noticeably improved and felt like 0-60.

I bought mine used from a local forum member who went with a supercharger. Sorry, wish I could help more than that.

I didn't do the power duct on mine simply because I liked the logo on the stock duct, which I painted in the correct colors.

Get it from either Colorado Speed or Maryland Speed. They have them on sale often enough that you shouldn't have to wait long to order one.

I have ran both systems... I liked the VRB2... However, it was very flimsy, cumbersome to install.. The Calloway is a much nicer fit, and def a better quality piece. JMO... as I have used both.

Callaway is on top in my opinion but it is very high price wise. Vararam is great and gives big performance gains but it can feel a little flimsy and be a pita to install. I personally run a Black Wing - it's as simple as it gets; it does the job done, and I got a steal on mine.

If I were you, I'd go Vararam. That's what I would go with.

Adding any CAI is a waste of $$ unless you do a lot of aggressive driving pushing well over 4,000 rpm's.

...or drive quite a bit in stop & go traffic during high ambient temp conditions and do NOT live in CA or anywhere visual smog inspection is done.

Any system with a larger air filter will boost HP, especially with a freer-flowing exhaust system. The real benefit is when your intake pulls in ambient air instead of hot, engine bay air. There are many true CAI systems out there. I can use any larger air filter setups with good results, as I installed a cold air scoop (polycarbonate wall pocket from staples) that allows outside air to blast past the filter AND keep the engine bay cool - a big + when trying to prolong the life of belts, hoses, circuit boards and batteries.

Here's how I did it:

A CAI is a good idea in ANY case. The ones that advertise "no tuning" will of course work ok with no tuning, but WITH tuning, they can be quite the power adder for the money.

Well we offer a complete custom tune package that can increase the entire driving experience. With a mod like the vararam CAI, it would be that much better. Increase in mpg and power.

The next problem is getting to use the MPG gain by keeping your foot out of it! Ha.

Wheelman1944,
It sometimes helps if you include your city/state in User CP > Edit details.
That way, local vendors and those who are knowledgeable in smog requirements for that state can chime in when you ask questions. For example, in CA, the K&N FIPK, Callaway Honker (non-Z06), and a couple of other intake systems are smog-legal.
