IMO the best combo is the passport 9500ix or the passport Max with the Escort Live smart cord. with that combo you can possibly detect cops 5-10 miles ahead!

Escort or Valentine. I've had the Escort 9500ix for over 2 years now. It has saved me from getting potential tickets 10x over. I especially find the speedcam and redlight databases very useful. You'll have to subscribe to that database service which is reasonably priced. It has a GPS built-in which can also display your current speed while in radar detection mode. I use the feature like a HUD unit instead of my speedometer.

Default Passport Max

The Passport Max is excellent! If you want up to date info go to Radar Roy he has excellent updates on detectors and jammers.

I agree. Funny thing, I tend to go more within the speed limits when on the 'Vette. Having a Torch Red exterior doesn't exactly help blend the car visually into traffic either. It makes for easy radar bait.

I agree that a few listed already are top notch, But the Beltronics RX65 is a top notch no frills protector that can be had for a heck of a lot less, and when compared to the best only loses in areas where extra features are not available.
It's a great set up for those that can't spend $500 on a unit.
Worth looking at.

I have the Valentine 1 and have had it for over 10 years. I will say that it has saved me more than I can count. I don't know about the Passport since I don't have it. However, I will attest that the V1's ability to tell you where the radar is coming from makes it nice. I don't think the Passport has that ability. I may be wrong.

While on the subject, can you move a hard-wired radar detector between two vehicles?

I have seen the nice mirror mount or sunvisor mounts for both the Escort and Valentines and I like the idea of hardwiring them into the auto-dimming capable rear view mirrors as I hate the idea of a cord running across my dash into a power source.

However, since I primarily drive my Corvette on the weekends, I would like to move the radar detector back and forth in between my daily driver and my C5. If I set up a similar mount in my daily driver, is their any type of adapting clip I could use for the hardwiring? That way, if I have two visor mounts, I can move the detector back and forth between two vehicles?

I've used a Passport 8500 for the last 8 years and just upgraded to the Max. I did this as my older detector could not be upgraded. I really enjoy the GPS features with the lockout feature.

Every Radar detector I have bought has more than paid for itself in saving me from tickets and Insurance increases. You get what you pay for, been using RDs for over 30 years and the Max is my 6th RD. Started with the original Fuzzbuster then the and original Cincinnatti Microwave Escort Passport detector.

Never used a V1, but getting a V1, Bel or a Escort model you can't go wrong, just pick which one suits your needs the best.

I have the visor mount in my Z06 with an extended mirrortap wire. I have a blendmount in my Denali HD with a mirrortap wire. The mirrortap and similar wires have the usual 'telephone' type plug that powers the radar detector. Swapping the unit from car to truck is as simple as can be. Here's a pic of it mounted in my truck. You can see the plug. FTR, I'm running a Passport 9500ix. It's GPS and ability to be upgraded are really nice features.

True, but RR only comments on the detectors he sells - thus he generally excludes the V1 since he doesn't sell them. Valentine choses to sell direct - no distributors - so their units generally don't get the press except from truly independent sources.

That said, I like both the V1 and the Escort 9500x. V1 looks both forwards and backwards and has a bogie counter so you know how many are out there and where they are (in front or behind you). It is great on the highway.

But the V1 doesn't filter out the metropolitan-area false-positive generators (radar on self-opening glass doors, etc.) and so it tends to give out false warnings way to often. In the city, the Escort does a much better job of warning you because it's data base includes all of those false-positive locations and filters them out.

I have one of each - the V1 for highway driving and a Escort for around town cruising.

As the carnival barker says, "You pays your money, and you takes your chances."

Great! Thanks!

I was wondering whether they have a telephone like plug or whether the wires actually had to be hard-wired in.

And the remote display panel allows you to "black-out" the main unit for night driving.
