During a recent trip SF to Las Vegas, and back, my Corvette started to make a whining sound. It only occurs during acceleration, and only in gears 4th, 5th and 6th. The whine seems unrelated to speed, take the foot off the gas, and the noise goes away.
When I put the car in neutral the noise goes away as well. I changed the transmission fluid, and the clutch fluid, and the noise is still there.
What are some things I can check to try and diagnose this issue.
Are you sure it's not the rear end ? Mine whines once I get over 60. Let off the gas it goes way. Try feathering the throttle when it's at its most prominent. If it quietens down with very light throttle then my bet it's the rear. From what I have read its not a rare problem. I have learned to live with mine. Switched to royal purple fluids and it didn't help. I added 2 bottles of the GM rear end additive and it did help some but it's still there.
The vehicle is an 03, and the belt is original it may be team to swap out the belt. Are there things I should look at to tell if the harmonic balancer is bad?
The whine is a new sound, and it does seem to be worse the harder I accelerate.
No matter how hard I accelerate in 1 & 2 I dont seem to get the whine.

Just a thought, but that would tend to rule out RPM related issues like your belt. The rear end, however, would still be turning at lower speeds in lower gears regardless of load. Load could still be a factor as stated above, but maybe only at higher rotational speeds?!?
Mine is an 03 6 speed. Started doing it with around 35000 miles. At 51000 now and it's still doing it. I find that it goes away completely when I have the stereo turned up really loud

Mine is also an 03 6 speed, coming up on 35k as well. I just noticed it the other day when I happened to to be driving with the top up and the radio off. I came here looking for what was wrong when I found this thread. Are you still going strong? It sounds like it's safe to ignore it. As little as I drive it I'll take a while to get to 51k. I just don't want to find myself stranded on the highway with diff failure.
The whining would go away completely I put it in neutral, or engaged the clucth. It wasnt related to rpm or speed. It has been currently diagnosed as a throwout bearing on the clutch. I will be fixing it within the next few months, and I'll post the results.
