Which starters are good to go with, and which to stay away from?
I am in the process of changing mine, and only want to have to do this once since I am using jack stands to get the car up. It is a 2003 coupe if that makes a difference.
I wasn't sure if the store brands are ok, or if summit, jegs, etc. are good too.
Please post what you had to take off to get to the starter especially the exhaust. I know you will have to drop it down but not sure if that is both sides or just passenger side and how far back do you have to drop it. I would appreciate it. I have looked at post in the last week on the starter issues and there is a lot of info on this forum. Google it and it will point U to this forum. I have better luck searching through google than on here. Make sure U get the starter with two long bolts, my understanding is the original has one long bolt and one short bolt and under certain conditions the short bolt will cause the lug on the block to break off, this is a bad thing.
You want to go with a two long bolt replacement. This is an upgrade to prevent the starter from breaking the block if a couple of things happen. Not real likely but it has happened many times to people.
Not at home so I can't provide all the info. If you PM me with your phone number I can call you and discuss. I can tell you the Delco Remy one I got and what the extra bolt part number is you will need.
With a stock system you will need to drop the exhaust system behind the exhaust manifolds. I can give you a video on that too.
I ordered an AC Delco replacement from Amazon last year when i replaced mine. I would personally stay away from all that Autozone crap.
Nothing wrong with Autozone. I bought a brand new Delco
Remy from them with a lifetime warranty. They have their rebuilt starters but I chose new for a little more money.
Can you post the info about the Delco starter that you purchased please???
Brand new Delco Remy sold under the Duralast Gold name at Autozone Part #989559 DLG9702S Lifetime Warranty Mine was listed for 2007 Silverado 2500 HD 2WD 6.0L $168.99
Never, never, never buy rebuilt electrical components!!!!!! Most rebuilders only replace what is actually broken or burnt out and every other old, worn, marginal part is still in there!!! Sure, they will warranty it, and then you get to do the whole job over again and no, your labor is NOT covered!!! In my younger, poorer days I often didn't have any choice as that was all I could afford. I soon learned that if it wasn't bad right out of the box, I was only living on borrowed time until it did soon fail!!! Once replaced four starters in a row, inside two months!!!!! One of them was bad right out of the box. Did the whole job twice, the same day!!
I bought one from Autozone about 3 1/2 years ago. It was a Sunday so only choice. It has worked fine and I didnt have to remove anything to replace it, just have to wiggle it to the right spot after the wires are off.
Check ebay. Seen them on there for 60 70 bucks. Just be sure you get the one ya want. There's still a lot of short bolt starters for sale too. I bought a couple starters off ebay a couple years ago for my race car, and they worked out great. Still on the first one and I'm running 13.8/1. Don't have any problems cranking it over.

I assume no fitment issues? What is the difference between this one and the one ours calls for, other than the bolt length?
Probably do not want the short bolt version that came in the car or you might end up with this...
They replaced my engine under warranty (very lucky).
Still not sure if going to the two LONG bolts is a solution (depends on whether the weak link is the block or the starter casing?), but that will eliminate a prime suspect. Have not heard of any long bolt versions breaking the block yet.
I am assuming that the Silverado version has the same clearances?
I bought a new Delco starter from AutoZone. DLG9947S for a 2005 Silverado 6.0L. I went to the local GM dealer and got a long bolt for $6, P/N 11610787. Since there is no lockwasher originally, I plan to install one on each bolt.

No fitment problems at all . GM ran the short bolt starters all the way through C4 production but when they realized that they had a problem they changed the part and part number to the long bolt version and they used the same long bolt version already in their trucks with the same engine because they knew that it was a stronger setup. Change it before you have big problems.
