Default ZO6 convertible. Do they exist?

Out of the gate I'm sorry no pictures of the car but if I get a chance I will certainly try and get some.

So I meet this guy with a convertible 2001 Z06. He claims it's one of 2,600 Built. I'm like no I don't think so they don't exist. Now I'm not going to lie I don't know whole lot about the C5 but I'm quite sure Chevy never built a Z06 convertible. In my research of this, I have found cases of people taking a Z06 and turning it into a convertible but none produced by GM.

So just to verify I'm not wrong I would like the Corvette forum knowledge enlighten me. Does this guy actually have some kind of rare car or is he just crazy and taken by the previous owner which is where he's getting this 2600 number from.

I feel kind of bad blowing this guy up and telling him his car is not what he thinks it is. If he's going to own the car he should know a thing or two about it.

No, there is no such thing as a production Z06 vert. All C5 Z06's came as hardtops.

I think this guy got taken for a ride by the previous owner who told them all this BS And this guy just ate up every word. I could tell by talking with him for a while he didn't know too much about Corvettes

Look at the VIN number.

Is there is an "S" in the 8th digit then it is a FRC Z06, and he cut the top off to make it a Z06 convertible.

If there is a "G" in the 8th digit then its a regular convertible and he make it look like a Z06.

The 6th digit will also tell the tale as well.... "1" = FRC, "2" = Coupe, "3" = Convertible

I hope you meet him again so you can call him out on it.

VIN Decode...

1. "1"= Built in US
2. "G"= General Motors
3. "1"= Chevrolet
4. Denotes the car line: Corvette is a "Y" body.
5. Provides more info about the car: Usually a "Y" but the ZR-1 is "Z"
6. Body style: "1" = FRC, "2" = Coupe, "3" = Convertible
7. Restraint code (safety feature level)
8. Engine:
....L98="8"
....LT1="P"
....ZR1="J"
....LT4="5"
....LS1="G"
....LS6="S”
....LS2=”U”
....LS7=”E”
9. Check Digit – 0 to 9 or X
10. Model year:
...."B" thru "N" are yrs '81-'92 respectively
...."P"='93
...."R" thru "T" '94-'96
...."V"='97
...."W"='98
...."X"='99
...."Y"='00
...."1"='01
...."2"='02
...."3"='03
...."4"='04
....“5”=’05
....“6”=’06
....“7”=’07
11. Plant: Bowling Green = "5"
12-17. Production sequence number that starts with the #1 for each model yr.

If your friend truly has a Z06 convertible, then at some point a prior owner had the car modified to remove the hardtop and add the convertible top. There are companies that do the conversion and do a very good job in making it look like a factory job.

Thank you, this will certainly solve the mystery. I'm likely to see him again tomorrow and will try and get this information.

I'm curious if this guy's car even has the trademark Z06 features.

Z06's lacked TPMS, had different seats with Z06 logo (more foam and less power features I think), no fog lights, rear brake ducts, Z06 emblem on the gauge cluster(and keys?), different gear ratios in the transmission, stronger "shot-peened" gears in the differential, LS6 engine instead of LS1, with different fuel rail covers and camshaft (and heads?) among other things.

I'm no expert on Z06's, but it should be pretty obvious if the guy's car doesn't have the above mentioned features.

I once bought some parts off a guy from this forum who told me that his automatic convertible was a Z06. I just smiled and nodded.

I have a 2004 Z06 conversion. It was well done and have no issues. I have the Z06 window sticker. The conversion was done back in 2007. The Z only has 32K on the clock.
