X10 here... whatever brand you get, remember it's made for dusting, NOT REMOVING BUGS! mine will soon be 20 years old... I store it in a great big ol' zip-loc bag and have never washed it.
I keep mine in the case that came with it. Also, if I remember right, it says in the instructions not to wash it, that it works better and better as it gets dirtier. This sure seems to have been my experience anyway.
I've also got two, one large one for the exterior and a smaller one for the interior. They are invaluable during pollen season. I've never had a problem with it damaging the paint in any way.
I have used the California Duster for years as well and love it for removing light dust after sitting in the garage for a few days. Also have the small one that I used less frequently on and around the dash.
It appears that there is overwhelming support for use of the California Duster!
I have the wood handle one that I have used on my show cars for 16+ years and have been thinking recently about getting a new one as it seems to leave a bit lately. Would like to hear if ther is away to wash it to work better again, I think they are loaded with parafin wax or something that helps pick up the dust but not leave any of the wax as long as you don't use it on a hot car.
I would be skeptical about washing it because it would remove some of the parifin wax which is what makes it work. They are said to work better as they get older although 16+ years is stretching the life . It's time to retire it and buy a new one. I am on my second one in 25 years.

This is on the mini duster package, I just soak the ends of the fibers in woolite overnight & let air dry.
I washed my Cal duster and it ruined it, seemed to not be as "absorbent" as before. So i just replace about every 6 months or so. I use it on my black and white cars, works great, no scratches.

Mine had over 16 years of dust and dirt on it and I was planning to get a new one anyway so I tried washing it in cold water with mild detergent. It still seems to work just fine, but I am still getting a new one. Probably just use the old one on the grocery getter.
I have one and it's a life saver here in north Texas. Leave your car outside for an hour and it will be covered in dust/pollen a foot thick. I haven't noticed any scratches or swirls from using it on my black car. I think the key is making sure you aren't pressing hard while using it
I have a pacific cost duster that is basically the same thing and after I use it I blow it off or out with compressed air to make sure it stays a clean as possible.
If mine got a lot of dust on it, I will fire up the compressor and use the air gun to blast off most of the dust, then use the duster. Takes 5 min. max.
Does anyone use the "California duster"? I hate opening up the garage to find that layer of dust that accumulates afetr sitting for a few days. I dont cover it in the warmer months so I can just get in and go. And I can't wash it anymore than I do...neighbors think I'm nuts already. The car is black so I'm worried about wiping her down and causing surface scratches. Any better ideas?
My '73 is black and I use it all the time. Never scratches. You just don't want to use it right after you've driven the car and it's hot.

I've been using one for years and it works great and cleans off the car quickly. In 5 minutes you can go from dusty to completely clean. Just make sure you shake it out regularly and don't let any sand or other abrasive particles get lodged in the duster. That is what could do damage but if you're diligent about keeping "clean" then they're perfect. I always keep one in my trunk.
