Another reason I powder coated - the stock castings get harder to clean over time as the dirt and grease become embedded in the pores. These coatings will make maintenance simple. They are extremely tough - I had to scrape a small amount from the inside surface during re-assembly of the alternator and it was a major effort to scrape this stuff off.

I just used a wire-brush wheel on a drill motor on mine last night. Not perfect, but way better looking than the oxidized look.
