Mind you tire temps were still in the 120's at that point and the asphault was about 110 so it was pretty sticky.

People that own a zo6 and claim traction in first either don't know how to floor their car or drive around a lot when its 90+ outside imo.
390rwtq here, and no issues with traction in any gear. I can stab the gas pedal to the floor in first without spinning unless it's wet or below 40. I promise I know how to make the pedal hit the floor.

What tires? r888, DR's, or equivilent will stick I'm sure. 200 tread wear tires will not stick a z06 in 1st from what i have experienced.

you have to roll on the throttle and keep a feel for traction. i floor 1st fairly often on the michelin pss.

you have a z06 or coupe? manual i assume? As i assume the stupid short 1st gear in the z06 is part of what makes sticking 1st impossible.

Yes z06, no first gear isn't useless for traction, no you don't have to roll onto the throttle at near stock power levels.

I have no issues lighting up my coupe in 1st on dry pavement. AFAIK my car is bone stock minus Z06 exhaust. The traction control will kick in, but I can get it a good foot to the right before that. I can scratch 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pretty easy.

I had a lot harder time burning my auto C4 but as soon as the tires slipped, the throttle would lift with the traction control on. Everything I have read says my '01 traction control is better, but it seems more lenient than it was in the C4.

<edit> I did 2 perfect donuts in the ZR1 I test drove in the back lot on a very sunny and dry day, but it had a little more power than my C5.

I had no problems with traction in 1st gear with those tires. Stock Z06 at the time.

i have a z06, tires are a big big part of it. if the rival is like prior bfg tires of that treadwear they have to be warm to grab.

pss is neat because it has such good traction at 60-70deg then improves as it warms

when you go take off next time don't just punch it in 1st, slowly push your foot down. when you get good you'll be able to feel what the tires are doing and only push as far on the throttle as the tires allow. took me years of practice but i can actually use 1st in the rain fairly effectively.

My goodyears had to be thoroughly warmed before they would get traction in first, and it still wasn't nearly as good as the conti's. I do think it may have something to do with the sidewalls being a bit softer. I'm running 32 psi for reference.
