I've read threads here about replacement shifters. It appears that the MGW and C6 shifters are both good ones. I'd like to have something that has a shorter throw than my stock shifter and one that operates more smoothly and is less notchy. I'm not someone who pushes the performance limits, I just want something that is a pleasure to shift. I am not going to install it myself, I'll have the local Vette specialist do it.
My take is that the C6 shifter would meet my needs. But there are some posts that refer specifically to the C6Z shifter. Is there a difference? If so, what difference is there? What would you recommend I get?
I recently installed a C6 shifter and new Amsoil transmission fluid in my C5 and can't believe how improved the shifting is. Slightly shorter throw, the C6 **** fits the hand much better than the C5 ****. And the fluid made more difference than I could have imagined. Do both and you will be quite pleased I am sure.
I don't know if there is a difference between a regular C6 and C6Z shifter but from what your goals are it sounds like the C6Z shifter is the one for you. I have the MGW and absolutely love it, but it definitely is notchy (which I like).
You do have to put a C6 **** on the C6 shifter as the C5 **** mounts differently.

Or buy a shortened C6 shifter threaded to take a standard 9/16 thread shift ****. TPS Motorsports for example.
My experience, BTW, is that changing the shifter to the C6 unit makes no difference to the notchiness - mechanically the C5 and C6 shift boxes, etc., are very similar. I actually went back to a shortened and re-threaded C5 shifter (my old one) from the C6 unit.
I did find a change of fluid eased shifting - I guess the other stuff was getting old. I just put in plain old Dex/Merc (not synthetic), works well.
Apart from that, there is the anti-venom mod to ease notchiness - search the forum for details. If you are having a shop do the shifter swap, they can do the mod for you too.
i'm really surprised at how every one loves the 6c shifter, my car came with a hurst shifter installed its short but notchy, my brother inlaw's c6 shifter is smother but its really sloppy there is a lot of play while its gear, also makes it a little hard to getting in the gears his car only has 40k on it.

I found that the lock bolt at the rear of the shifter box had come just a little loose when I when looking for gear shift "slop" a while back. It needs to be torqued up to spec along with a dose of Loctite. Also make sure the shifter box itself is not moving around on the torque tube.
Bought my c5z in June '13 and it already had a short throw in it. Was very notchy. And very hard to get into 2nd and reverse. But I just adapted to it. not saying all short throw shifters are like this. I just assumed mine had been abused by previous owners.
Few months ago, my shifter refused to go into 2nd gear anymore. I just had to go from
1st to 3rd. After a month of driving like that, I purchased a c6 shifter and installed it myself. Worlds difference. Much softer and smoother than the short throw was.
And installing it is very easy. Only takes about an hour, 20 min if you know what you are doing.
I went with the newer version of the C6 shifter. The angle is much better. I also removed the Anti-venom mod once I installed this shifter. Very smooth with good engagement and no rattle!
Oh no! I always laugh at those who respond to a really old thread and here I just did it! I’m going to quarantine myself for the next week....
That is O.K... lol Most of us are guilty of this sin....
Since you did, question. What boot do you have on there - did you have to mod the stock or did you get a custom boot. Also, in your opinion, how big of a difference is there in the C6 shifter compared to the C5 unit? If they looked exactly the same - would you do it again (C6 **** does look much more modern).

I see folks commenting on using old post all the time, does the info somehow go bad after a few yrs., LOL. When I am looking for Info I don't care how old it is as long as it helps me. Merry Christmas to all
That’s a custom Redline Goods boot. I once had the metal wire ring under it but I never liked how the fit was around the plastic console area. I just have it tucked under the console. I have a couple of foam pieces around the shifter to fill up the void below.
The press-fitting inside my C5 shifter failed and I could never get the **** to fit tight. It was just too sloppy for me and it rattled.
This C6 shifter is shorter and the **** sits down lower. There is also a slight angle in the shaft and the **** is shaped better towards the driver.
After installing this, I removed my 1-washer Anti-Venom mod and that ended up having the right feel.
I purchased the complete assembly. I recommend it.
