Hi buddy...well yess believe it or not i didnt know how important is the air dam...incredible....i installed new air dam yesterday...and temperature dont go over 200 with the car runing ...at normal city speed 35,,,40 miles....idling in heavy traffic yes it get 225,,230 , but fans start to work perfect...i was freak out because i know c5 runs hot but even with the car runing my car never go down the temperature till air dam instalation...unbeliavable how important is the air dam....so happy now...thanks a lot ....good to know that exist so wonderful forum have a blessed day
This winter one of my goals was to clean the radiator and condenser, with all shrouds off I blew air to the front of the car, tons of crap, still could see crap in the condenser, took the hose with 40 psi of pressure, still was not clean. Took the fans and radiator out of the car, sprayed again with 40 psi of water pressure, could not believe the crap that still came out, but thought it was clean. After the fans and radiator were back in the car I decided to put a screen in front of the condenser wrapping the top and bottom of the radiator. (plus the lower screen at the air inlet) in the process of adding the screen I used channel aluminum on the top and a piece of wood cut to fit on the bottom of the radiator. To install the tight fit piece I had to tap it with a small hammer to get it in, could not believe the sand and small stones that fell out of the radiator. My car never went over 230 degrees !!!!

So, I opened this up to try to figure out what happened to my car. It boils down to as soon as I put my front CF spoiler on and took the car out my temps ran up. I did have an issue with air and found out in my case that if the expansion tank cap was left off for a day or two the air would escape and it did. So, I tried that feebly and no joy. I took it out for a drive and put my digital gage read on engine temp to try to see what was going on. When I was driving at low speed the temp stayed low, when I got over 50 the temp rose fast to 230. I was afraid my spoiler was deflecting the air flow, after looking below and seeing the air deflector I can assume the air should still be flowing up into the radiator unit.
I still have the problem but believe I have the answer. When I put my spoiler on I left off the 2 side pieces of the air deflector, I think that is effecting the spring loaded center piece and it is being pushed up at 45 to 50 mph speeds and thus no air flow for cooling, it is being deflected under the car. I am amazed at the engineering GM did on this car and it reminds me to be wary of mods that effect car performance.
That's my problem, I hope by installing the lower deflectors and making sure the center piece is performing as it should be my issue will be fixed. If not then back to the drawing board! Any thoughts? Thanks!

When i bought my vette it cames without air dams....i didnt know how important were for cooling system till i installed them..going at 70 mph my car got red zone....overheating ...even with the car runing at expressway...after install air dams...never get 220 or 230 ° in your case can be the center piece..that one is the most important to get your car runing fresh....
AS A GM factory Field Engineer after my design phase from 1995 through launch, I saw hundreds of problems and was responsible for 31 engineering fixes for the C5 platform... You ask question as if you are challenging my input...I've seen most of the problems from field problems when dealerships request Factory engineering services.. I've taken these cars apart or had them taken apart for inspection and debugging.
I hate this crap I get from clueless children who constantly challenge my input...I posted pictures and a video to show how buried the actual radiator is.. and you said you inspected yours... NO You Didn't and I was trying to point that out to you as a courtesy, and you disrespected me and my help... and for what< I don't get paid to be here.. I came here 14 years ago to give back thousand of help requests, just as I was doing for GM. as a courtesy here.. it has become apparent to me that too many clueless challenge everything I say so with my health in such bad condition... I don't need this any more. You Kids can figure it out yourself... Wait, you already have it all figured out... when this forum become negative, a smart man would have to give it up...
I don't need this any more.
Evil, Its hard to be right and then the kids get involved, I look at as Sunday comics and just read on. Please don't give up on us folks that truly appreciate your input. This forum has helped me so much on how too do things that I would of never attempted to do on my own and as such I have enjoyed working on my car so much over the last 5 years. Keep the faith my friend!
