You say that like it's a bad thing...

I have enough trouble with the dumb-asses slamming in to me at the gym every night because they can't look up before they start walking and once they plant themselves on a workout machine, they roost there for an hour texting or yelling at someone while they constantly stare down at their addiction. Not to mention all the idiots screaming on the treadmills at any fool who will pick up on the other end - some of them have been escorted out because they are so disruptive. As far as "texting" that is like backing up - they are going to go crazy once the telegraph makes a come back!

I have been a huge Apple supporter since 1985, but even they have gone completely nuts since Steve Jobs died. An iWatch? Really??? So now I have to watch the horde chew on their wrists for the next 5 years until they come up with an iSuppository!

The ironic thing is that I make my living steeped in technology! I am one of the guys writing all these apps for the dummies and building websites for them to try to view on their electronic postage stamps. Just yesterday I had an in-person meeting with a group of clients to discuss a new website for them (at their request). Every time I asked one of them a question, they would look down and try to Google the answer - the "processing" side of their brains are completely dead. Every time I would start to answer a question, one or more of them would have their damn phone go off and they would start texting an answer - just a rude addiction. I would stop talking and they would eventually look up and say "Now, what were you saying?" I finally gave up on them and turned down the job today - just refuse to work for people like that anymore - they can take their "business" as they call it to someone who will gladly suck them dry of money.

The problem I see is that everyone seems to always want to be somewhere they are not and they never seem to be where they are? You may not notice it if you are one of the majority who has consumed the Kool-Aid, but to people like me as soon as the phone comes out when I am having a conversation with someone, my respect for them drops about 10 notches instantly. Not only is it "rude", they just look like a drug addict to me.

No, I do not jibber-jabber when I am driving!
You're 100% correct. I asked my wife just the other day how we ever survived growing up without cell phones. I talked at a local high school a couple of weeks ago and was amazed at how many kids were using their cell phones during passing periods. In my opinion, we've lost the ability to communicate with one another face-to-face. It's so much easier to pick up our cell phones and send a quick text rather than talk to someone. Our son comes over for dinner and he's always texting someone. I asked him the other night what was so important that he couldn't eat dinner without texting.

Technology is a wonderful thing, but I it's impeded our ability to communicate face-to-face. I love going to the grocery store and watching women pushing a grocery cart and talking on the phone. My pet peeve is people who checkout and are on the phone. We went for a walk the other day and saw a dad with a young boy walking in the park. The dad was on his cell phone and the little boy was walking by his side. I commented to my wife that it was a great way to develop a father/son relationship while spending time with his child. I guess I'm just getting old and crotchety.

I will admit that I have texted in my daily driver, which is an automatic, but have not in my Corvette. What I don't get is how you can steer, handle shifting gears, and text! I only have 2 hands....

Short answer, no. It would be extremely difficult anyway to text and drive a manual.

I do text, but only because that's the way my kids and wife communicate. I told my daughter about a new app that came out where you could start the app, dial the number, and start talking and it would convert it to text and send it. She got all excited about it and started to ask what app, then I laughed. She didn't get it, but her husband did....

The "phone in your hand 24/7" meme has hopelessly confused people who already had zero ability to tell the difference between "important" and "urgent".

Every day in the news, somewhere in our country, we find a terrible accident caused by someone texting or talking (distracted) on cell phones.
And if they are not 'all' dead, we see people standing around the scene, crying hysterically, and apologizing tearfully, saying 'I didn't mean to', or something like that.
Or, later, in front of a judge we see them saying they are so sorry for what they did.....

As a society, we must state forcefully; that 'we do NOT, and will NOT accept their apology any longer. We will lock them up in a penitentiary for years, for killing our loved ones. They will never ever be issued a drivers license again, should they ever get out of prison. No more apologies accepted!!! This, can no longer be called 'an accident', but must be called what it is, willfull homicide.

It took MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) a generation to awaken the American people to the fact that drunk driving was not funny, or cool, or manly! To make people aware of the carnage on our highways caused by 'good old boys' who'd been at the bar, too long, teens, and others being irresponsible on our highways
.
But finally, society woke up, and started making penalties stiffer (one could argue not tough enough, yet). And no one I know, any longer thinks drunk driving is acceptable behavior. I"m old enough to remember when that was not the case.

This whole texting (and talking while driving) thing needs to stop. It is not a constitutional right, to endanger my loved ones (or yours) on the highways of America!!! The science is in, it is irrefutable, that these distractions (talking and texting on smart phones) are killing Americans and others every day.
In my career (41 years) as a Locomotive Engineer, we were drilled and trained, over and over about the science of being 'distracted' while operating America's freight trains. They know that 'distracted' impairs judgement and decision making and situational awareness; just the same as fatigued or drunken drivers/operators. All that science applies to drivers of cars, busses, planes, trucks, river barges, etc.

The facts are; the earth is not flat, and distracted driving kills people!!!

I have seen this carnage, first hand and close up; and there are NO apologies that should be accepted for this, any longer.

Don
