It depends on driving skills. Some people have such low skills they should not be allowed to drive at all. Others can multitask and still drive well.
1. Everyone thinks they are in that second group.
2. Even the people in the second group are worse drivers when they are multitasking.
So even if we find a foolproof way to separate the two groups, multitasking while driving falls into the category of "just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done".

A lot of my friends and family think I'm a bit crazy,
but I'm not THAT crazy!
SCUBA diving, fine.
Solo in a small plane, fine.
Shooting professional fireworks, fine.
Taking a Corvette down the drag strip, fine.
Driving around Road Atlanta in my Z06, fine.
(my wife's doctor thinks I have a death wish)
Texting while driving, what, are you CRAZY?
all the time. actually sent a text in the staging lanes at the race track before and have going down the front straight.
best part is pissing off old people
when you have old people going 45 on major highways along with the reaction time of a drunk snail you tell me what's more dangerous. the guy making everyone else rage with slow reflexes or a guy with track time and very quick reflexes. i seriously think i could probably text, drop the phone and react faster than some of the geriatrics could staring straight ahead with both hands on the wheel
second would be idiots who don't sleep enough and or stay in shape. this also slows you down a LOT

If everyone thinks they are in that category 80% are wrong. I would guess most on here aren't. If you drive for a living you get to where it's almost automatic.

I would have picked a much larger number, like maybe 99% and change: nothing I've seen here makes me think the forum membership drives any better than the general population.

I'm glad you live in the complete other end of the US !!!!(away from me)

I worked in a manufacturing facility for 37 years. After I took an early retirement, I wound up diving a delivery truck for one of the "big box auto parts chains" for 5.5 years. YES, I was "driving for a living".
Given the experience I had, while driving that truck, I would NEVER even consider texting or using a cell phone while driving. WHY???
Because I needed to apply 110% of my attention to driving, so I could avoid all of the other azzh**es that WERE texting and yacking, wandering all over the road, pulling out of parking lots, directly in front of me, and running red lights!!!
I hate to tell you this but 99% of truck drivers do it everywhere.
Well one good thing, they(texters) are easy to spot, their the ones in one lane then the other and then in between lanes, then off one shoulder to the next, and most of the Morons don't use cruise control so their speed goes up and down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
