My Z seems to be reading the outside temp 5 to 6 degress higher then it actuall is. Today it was about 95 and the reading in the car read 100 to 103. My 01 vert's readings seemed to right on. Has anyone experienced this? Is this normal?
I think it is probably right. The sensor is about 6 to 10 inches above the pavement under the front facia. I have compared mine while driving by several banks and such and I am always within a degree or so. If you are comparing it to the local news or weather channels report for the day it could be way off. Those temperatures are usually taken at the airport or the news station which could be miles from you. I have noticed mine reading 102 when the official temp for the day was only 96. I also think that the official temperatures are taken in a shaded area and not direct sunlight which makes a huge difference.
I am actually comparing to local banks temps, which in my vert was usually righ ton or within a degree. Now it seems to of by 5 to 6 degrees from these same bank temp readings.
Mine reads about 7 degrees warm, regardless of temperature. Haven't had the car in cold (below 60 degree F) weather so I don't know what it does at the other end of the scale, but it is always high.
I have had C5's for almost four years now and the sensor is always reading about 5 degrees high. I would think the air temperature above a blacktop surfaced road is at least that much higher in the summer. I bet that GM engineering has taken that factor into account in their engine programming.
If you have the brass, it would be interesting to take the car out when the road is covered with snow and there is no radiational heating from our mostly black/dark road surfaces. How about an Alaskan winter.
Have you ever noticed the change on a country road when you get to the bottom of a hill late at night with still air. Several degrees cooler.
My Z reads about 5 degrees higher when I'm cruising. I just check it while parked in the garage. The car hasn't been started in days :( and the reading matched a thermo mounted on the wall. I think the problem may lie in the location of the sensor. Its got to be pulling heat off the road. I'm curious to see what it does in winter. My C4 seems much more accurate
