I haven't posted here in awhile but just had to say that I bought a 2015 ZL1 and holy sh#t, this thing is bad ***. Reminds me of my sold but not forgotten 2004 Z06, but with a whole new attitude!
The comparison between my Z06 and my ZL1 is like this;
The Zl1 is fast and feels more refined and smoother, magnetic shocks are really nice and change the road feel based on the setting. I can best describe this car as a combination of Corvette plus CTS V = ZL1. The power is amazing, the supercharger is awesome and I love the muscle car looks!
I'm thinking it would smoke the Z in the 1/4 but I'm guessing the Z would still show it some tailights at the track.
4100#, that is heavy (although the Challenger is 400# more yet). Reading an article in Motor Trend, the ZL1 pulled a 3.9 for 0-60 and 12.2 in the 1/4. The 04Z is spec'd at 3.9 and 11.97 IIRC. It'll also do 0.99G's which IMO is pretty impressive for 4100# (Z06 is 1.08G). http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...r_srt_hellcat/
The Challenger did 3.7 and 11.7 in the same comparo.
All in all it's a very fast car, but it won't embarrass your Z.

The only tail lights a C5 Z06 would show a ZL1 @ the track would be @ startup once it was given a 10 second advantage, then it would still lose
'02 Z posted 7:56 time, ZL1 7:42 - no comparison whatsoever, with more modern tires I'm sure the gap would be tighter, but not 14 seconds tighter.
I am confused as to why the ZL1 is so tough to put down a good 1/4 time (comparatively) but it seems like that would be a driver's race between the 2.
Doesn't matter that it's heavy - so isn't a GTR, so isn't the Z28, so isn't a porsche panamera, they all scorch the track - the "FAT" Z28 camaro is faster than a C6 Z down the Nurburgring - 7:37 vs. 7:42.9
Maybe I'm just going off personal expereince, having had 2 new ZL1's in my run group earlier this year. Of course I had NT01's, track pads and...a few more ponies than the 04 Z I'm running came with from the factory, but...in hindsight, one of them I passed on lap 2, the other one that had done some mods took a little longer.
You're right, they held their own. I have not had the chance to battle a Z28, but they seem to be a beast at the track. The newer, lighter versions of both should be screamers. Throw in the GT350r and...I'm going to have to be on my A game to keep up.
What a great time to be a car guy! (just wish I had a few more coins to throw at one of these new ponies!!!)
That's 2% quicker around that track (depending also on driver) in a car that's 11 years newer, more advanced.
I'd say that speaks volumes about the 11 year old car as much as it does about a 2015 car.
Not trying to say the Z06 is a better car in any or every way, just sayin' it's pretty darn impressive.

Oh I'm all about the C5Z - I even considered a used CTS-V or ZL1 as well - but 2% quicker is a bit misleading, once you get under 8 minutes for nurburgring you're in fast territory, and every additional second is significant. 14 second gap is massive. I think tires would help quite a bit (realize that the tires on both the ZL1 and especially the Z28 are in no way shape or form "normal" street tires - the Z28 has like 315mm fronts I think!!) but again - these cars aren't in the same league
Sure you can say "but the Z06 is 11 years older" to which I'd reply, yeah but the ZL1 is 1000 lbs heavier!!
At the end of the day both great cars and great track machines that go about it different ways, the light weight of the Z06 is a huge benefit, and I think the heft/size of the camaro takes some getting used to and trusting the brakes/chassis/suspension to do their thing is a learning curve - and then once we talk modding forget about it! I think a more even race would be a bolted C5Z w/ proper track tires, better shocks, track alignment vs. the ZL1 - then you will have narrowed the gap.
Course the ZL1 just needs a tune and pulley to add another 100hp @ the crank
The ZL1 is a neat car no doubt, but I can share some personal data as I had the opportunity to go heads up against one at the track (1/4 mile). The ZL1 beat me by .09 seconds (we were both stock on non-DR tires, I have a 02 C5Z) but that is ONLY because I completely, and I mean completely blew/missed my 1-2 shift. The 02Z 60' and 330' times were faster in spite of the blown shift and the 1/8 was virtually identical.
I never had a chance to race him again but I also never observed a time that day where the Zl1 was faster than what I was able to run the same day.
In the end I feel its a driver's race when pitting these two cars against each other, at least in the 1/4 mile. I wish the OP the best with his.
