I live in upstate NY and recently have talked to other Vette owners that have been ticketed for the no front plate BS. What is the best plate holder (manual) that is easy to install on a 2004?
NY has a proposed legislation in the works for two years now to drop the front plate if you pay $50 a year. But after reading another post re the traffic light cams and no plate to photograph, I would think this legislative piece is dead in the water.
Yeah, that legislation isn't going anywhere unfortunately. I have one like this on my '03. You can paint it to color match but I just left it black. I'd looked and I don't have a pic of it with that on. I can take one next week when we get back north if you ping me and remind me. Just a tad busy with everything that's going on.
Thanks all - been a tad hectic here... Headed back north Saturday morning to begin the cleaning out, yard saleing, packing mountain of work.
Fla is going to require front plates just as I f'ing move here!??! Well, that blows chunks! It doesn't really surprise me but it sux.
If that's the case, I'll run it. I know everyone *itches that Fla's hot and humid. Well, that's better than freezing and three feet of white chit IMO. If I get too hot, I'll jump in the pool or go inside. While we've been here it's been mid-90's and really hasn't been brutal with the constant breezes. Now, I know - the humidity hasn't arrived yet but as I said, I'll take that over freezing any day.
As for "no emissions testing", I'm sure that they'll change that before too long. Not a problem for me though as I'm pretty much stock except for the CAI and Z06 TI catback. Don't need any more HP/Torque than it already has as far as I'm concerned.
Welcome to FL! I am not aware of any law change in having to run a front plate. As far as emissions testing, FL had it years ago and then did away with it. I have seen no push to bring it back. Been in the Tampa area now for just under 50 years and would not trade it for the snow from where I came for anything. The humidity is not as bad as it is made out to be and being on the coast we have always got sea breezes that make it pleasant. Enjoy your new home and year long Corvette season.
Thanks Craig! We're going to be just north of you in Rotonda. BTW - who's the best Vette shop around? I'm not a "wrench" so I'll be in need of a GOOD shop. I should probably start a separate thread on that though...
Not familiar with shops closer to Rotonda, but north of you about 85 miles in St. Pete there is PowerTech Performance. Excellent Corvette shop reasonable pricing.

Thanks, but that'd be a hike. I'll research when we get back here full time at the end of July.

This law makes no sense unless the fine for not paying is high. How will cops know who has paid the fee? This may work if the computers in their cars that can read hundred of plates each hour can signal violators.
Are they going to spend their time stopping then all the violators?

Good point!
As it is, I'm already paying $50/year for a 'vanity plate' on my car, so I'm most certainly NOT paying another $50 for the "honor" of being able to have just one plate!!
I think the state of California , like many other financially strapped states, would do well to do away with requiring a front plate.
That alone cuts the cost by 50%.
I would much rather have the filler plate that came with the car, but don't want to give LE any reason to stop me.
As long as the law requires I have a front plate, it might as well be something I want, which is why I chose the personal plate I did.
I see a lot of people in crosswalks, when I am stopped at a light, looking down and pointing at the plate, and smiling.
Long as it has to be there, I think it should say something.
Bob.
In Cali when I've been stop by LE or gone thru traffic check points and even a California HWY patrol stop, they never once said anything about me not having a front plate. They just comment on how nice the car is, even asking once if I wanted to trade for the day for his patrol motorcycle. It's something I feel they really don't enforce on vettes.

Ever since someone posted something about a "news" article saying you had to have two plates in FL starting this fall, I searched; quite a bit as a matter of fact. I found nothing even when I went to the Sun Sentinel's website to check on stories on that subject. Same thing. Nothing.
In NJ they almost did away with front plates a few years ago. They thought it would save the state money seeing as how the state is always having money troubles. Almost passed too, but the state troopers were against it for "safety" reasons (they couldn't shoot your front plate). Meanwhile I haven't had a plate for 17 years and haven't gotten a ticket for it, even when stopped for other reasons. I might be moving to FL within the next year, too. Most of our families live there already. No plate and no emission tests. But no trees or twisty hilly roads either.
Never had the ***** to replace my front plate with the filler panel on my C5...with my luck a NJ Trooper will bust me......
Back when I owned this:
I used to have the filler plate on...entering onto a freeway i pass a NJ Trooper and the next thing i know he's on my tail...pull over and he gives me the talk about having to have a front plate. Gave him the excuse that I was at a show over the weekend and forgot to change it out. He brought it hook, line and sinker. After that I figured it's not worth the hassle so I use the front plate
Just got stopped the other day. Young state trooper who pulled into traffic on the highway and floored it to catch up to me. I asked him if he felt a 53 year old man driving the speed limit was a risk to society. He said all laws need to be enforced and how important the front plate was to law enforcement. A motorcycle went screaming by us and I asked if it's so important why don't motorcycles have front plates?

And how many tickets did you get for your "questions"?

No ticket, when the officer approached I asked permission if I could express a few concerns. He said no problem and we continued to have a civil conversation. It ended with him complimenting the car and I wished him a good day. I have nothing but respect for law enforcement, I just don't agree with some of the laws they are asked to enforce.

Kewl! I figured with those two questions you probably ended up locked up overnight! You would have in NY.
