the larger the diffuser, the larger the air expansion area is. the greater the expansion area the more down force it creates using the venturi effect. f1 racers are limited to the size of diffuser they can use so they are limited for down force. I have no way to get specific numbers to test it. vs other methods but from my understanding of the principals of aerodynamics and fluid dynamics. I think this should be functional. the formed diffusers you see are mostly for looks because they don't close out the underside of the rear. I made this one to stick out far enough to smooth out the air turbulence behind the bumper. it still doesn't stick out further than the rear most portion of the car. its pretty even.
A slight improvement over the attempt above. I don't think it will do any diffusing though.
When I decided to make mine it was for the basic intent of looks. As are every after market diffuser out there for the C5 and C6. I spoke with every manufacturer that makes diffusers for the Corvette about R&D hard data and wind tunnel tests that they had on their products. Not one had any of this info. For the most part they all stated they are mainly for looks. A so called race diffuser is just a more aggressive style. Yes maybe there is some benefit to this piece. Some maybe more than others. I will be adding an optional underpan that will attach to mine to make it a more functional diffuser but its mainly for looks. I'm in no way knocking the OP's diffuser. It may be a.very functional piece. Just no real way to collect data on the actual effectiveness. It was not what I was going after when making mine but it may be for others. Someone has to step forward with new ideas or things stand still.
I applaud your efforts for trying to create or put 'function' over form. It would be great if there was a way for you to produce some type of tangible results after your final install. At some point in time I too would like to install a functional diffuser, good luck !!
Currently designed functional front & side Aero pieces, splitter/side skirts (carbon fiber)!! I will send you a PM, and I will get you a set at cost if you like them, after registering as a vendor.
Its very interesting, and I like to see people taking chances with something different , so bravo on that , but it really isn't working, id just sell that one you have and start with one that fits and flows a little better.
Even if it does work ,, it doesn't look right ,, it looks like you just took a part from another car and bolted it on ....
Oh you don't have any experience? Yeah thought so. The name of the thread is "Functional" rear diffuser... Not Good looking diffuser.
I gave you all the physics in my earlier post. You ever take FLUID MECHANICS? I did! You have an ENGINEERING degree?? I have 2. Can you even understand what I posted??? You even know what a diffuser is SUPPOSED to do?
Again, the OP's attempt at scabbing something on doesn't work for me aesthetically and from the look of how it's mounted, I'm SURE it doesn't do what a diffuser is SUPPOSED to do. It is his car and he can hack it up anyway he likes. You come on a public forum asking stuff like this and you WILL find people that don't see the world you do. Making a FUNCTIONAL diffuser takes a wind tunnel and lots of sensors and trial and error. Doubt 99+% of the street cars need one for what they were intended for, just like those low slung front diffusers/spoilers-just targets for speed bumps/low driveways/parking stops.

You guys take this stuff too seriously.
Other than on racetracks there isn't much room on the public roads
to go fast enough for this to be a functional benefit.
On the other hand the aesthetics can be appreciated (or not) on all the Posers and race car wannabees while the car is standing still

Looks like a backwards snowplow. Or maybe he ran over a Honda.
You don't have a very creative mind. Your reply is just plain stupid. You seem like you just are having a crap day and want to be negative all the time. Try and encourage people. I hope your day gets better man!

You have to keep people from ruining nice cars with SILLY plastic bolt ons like this, off of OTHER CARS My days are FINE by the way. Have lots of toys and money, good job and a wife I can tolerate most of the time. Oh, and I don't have a snowplow under my Corvette
Looks a little like the directional veins on a snow thrower I have.
Maybe 2 or 3 of these black veins could go across the back, creative enough for you?
If you had a track only car and could prove the functionality I would keep it on. From the pics you have a nice looking Vette with the wheels and fender flares but now you are just ruining it.
OP-- I think it turned out pretty good. Is the whole thing custom assembly or did you start with a diffuser from another car and modify it? Very interested in what you used to make it.

Scroll back, it's a modified unit from a Lotus Exige.
