Im almost afraid to ask this question. I overheard some young kids (20s) talking about adding an Ipod type device to the radio system without upgrading anything. Something about tying it into the multi-disk cd player?? Sounds totally wrong to me, but I don't know diddly about it. Anyone know about this?? I have an 98 vert with a factory Bose.

It's possible and they're doing it. Do a youtube search for tablet as car stereo....There's a good one about using a nexus 7 tablet. Then you have an in-dash android device with a 7" screen....
adding a tablet is another option, but yes they exist. Its called the Isimple interface. It basically adds an apple cable to the factory system. it only works when you hit aux on the factory radio and you can even -next- the songs by hitting skip on your radio. Its pretty nice for what it is. I have one in my car and keep my ipod where the ashtray was always hooked up and the folding cover will cover it when i dont need to see it.
There are two types, One that connects at the back of the radio and one that connects at the remote CD player if you have one.
I have a remote player but still used the radio connection since I wanted to just route the cable to the passenger side and already had my console off at the time.
Either way if you have a remote player you can't use it with the iPod interface.
There are several options. I just used the GM-Aux and connected where the external CD player would connect. Going on 12+ years w/ my MP3 player and still works well.

What equipment did you use and how did you install?
This is what I used (link below) I unplugged CD player in rear of car and routed cable up to center console. Less then 1/2 hour job and works great!
I also purchased an CableJive and that hooks in to my Android phone for Pandora.

I used the GM10-AUX and COR-HAR. There was a thread on here with full installation instructions. I did this > 10 years ago, but I'm still the thread is still around.
I purchased this Peripheral pxdp pxhgm4 for my I phone about 5 years ago from Dennis @ Double D Mods . Works great !! The model above is for car with OUT cd player ,so if you order make sure you order right one with or without cd player. Direction were step by step and easy to do . Took me 1 1/2 hours to do, Mine had to plug into back of radio so I had to take a part console. connector to iphone is into center console like in picture in post # 4
