It's a more common problem with the newer cars. According to a friend who owns 2GM and 3 FORD dealerships, the pack rats and mice love eating the harness out of new cars. He told me that since the Dielectric is soy based on a lot of the new wires they like the taste.
I have had mice chew on wires and almost totally devoured the battery wrap on my GMC pickup..
I use a stuff called Mouse Magic
It's little packets of a granular stuff treated with peppermint and spearmint oils. So far ,so good. Also Bounce dryer sheets. Makes the whole garage smell good!Hate the smell of mothballs.

I do too. My wife had a co worker who liked keeping food in her desk. Mice found it. She (the co worker) tried mothballs. This accomplished making the office stink for everyone but was not particularly effective at deterring the rodents.
Mice leave a pheromone trail behind everywhere they go, more are sure to follow this trail. That is why all the suggestions to cover this pheromone trail eg. moth *****, Irish spring, good quality rum (ooops, that is for me) and hopefully keep other mice away. Miss Molly (a cat) is excellent as mice smell cats and don't come near. To get rid of the mouse you may have already a few good mouse traps should do the trick. Good luck

Well I can see there certainly isn't a shortage of things to try. Thanks to all who contributed suggestions!
The car is a daily driver. If there are mice still around, is daily usage something that would drive them away? The car is parked under an awing at my apartment, and there are several cats roaming the property. Hopefully that will help too.

hmmm I wonder if the bubble-ishus thing would work in my Carport, maybe keep the dust and coyotes off ??..
naw that thing would go nuts in a 40mph breeze..would be quite a sight though. Hope the wild chipmunks and rabbits don't like my soy wiring..anyway I put leftovers out to keep the varmints distracted from the vette.
Irish spring, buy a pack of 3 bars and make many pieces and put all over, in wheel wells, engine compartment, glove box, center console, trunk. Use the boxes that they came in.
On the bounce dryer sheets, use 20-30 sheets. Follow above locations
Also at tractor and supply co, they have mice repellent, smells great!!!!!!
Here ya' go:
Peppermint Oil
To use peppermint to get rid of mice, purchase peppermint oil at a health food store. Peppermint oil is a more concentrated form of peppermint. It's different from peppermint extract that you find in the baking aisle at the grocery store. You can often find it near the aromatherapy oils at the health food store. Soak a cotton ball in the peppermint oil and place it near where you think mice are entering your home. Typical places where mice squeeze in are doorways where the bottom seal is weak or near clothes dryer vents. You can leave several cotton ***** soaked in peppermint oil in areas of the house where mouse droppings are frequent. The strong peppermint odor sends the mice back outside.
I have also used the peppermint oil strategy. I live in a rural area and I have a pickup that sits outside most of the time. What I do is soak several cottonballs with the oil and put them in a plastic baggy punched with many small holes. I put one bag in the engine compartment and one in the console, no rodents! In my garage I use a fast cat. I have only seen one mouse as it was running from her. No more mice.

Yes, A DD is pretty safe. Mice do not like movement. While a mouse might get into the car overnight, they won't want to stay there once the car moves.
