2001 Repair Help Needed
Hi my name is Mike I have a 2001 C5 automatic with approx 42,000 miles on. My service active handling warning came on and is now coming on with more frequency. I took it to the Chevy dealer and was told it would require replacing the unit at a cost of $5000.00. I was wondering if there was a repair that could be made vs the replacement which represents approximately 25% of he value of the vehicle. Also I put on new Corsa exhausts this summer but have noticed the inside of the two pipes on the right have a lot of exhaust residue in them, would this signify leaking rings? Seems like a lot of issues with a car that only has 42,000 miles on it.
Any help you can give me will be appreciated.
Mike

Your warning light may be due to your EBCM module starting to fail. There are many threads about this issue. Assuming this is what is the cause of your problem, the good news is its fixable - maybe. There are a few cottage businesses, and individual brave souls, who have fixed the problem. Do a search of "ABSfixer" for an example.
As to the residue, some 2001s did have an issue with oil consumption because to the piston rings that were used; my opinion is that its manifestation was somewhat reflective of the manner in which the car was driven. Good luck. Oh, btw, the dealer is totally screwing you, assuming he can actually even find a new replacement module.

You must pull your codes grasshopper. With out them it would be just a shot in the dark. Pull and post them and there will be a lot of help coming from the forum.

Yes pull the codes. They should tell you a lot. If it is your EBCM, it can be repaired or replaced. My EBCM went bad on my '01. I bought a new unit at Amazon for $500 and replaced it myself. There are plenty of instructions on how to do it and it is not too hard to do. It is a good time to replace hoses when you do it since it makes it easier to get to with the upper hose off.
What color is the exhaust residue and do you have to add oil between changes? Does it smoke?
It may only have 42K miles on it, but it is 15 years old.

In addition to the codes as instructed by 8VETTE7, can you let us know where you are. There may be one of the many talented members in you area that can help with the diagnosis and repair.
