How long did it continue running after you shut the key off?
I was in a panic but I would guess 2-3 minutes. When I turned the key off it wasn't like it was full-fledged running but more like run-on. So I turned the key back to run and it would start running normally. Finally I dumped the clutch in 5th to get the engine to stop. That's when I heard the battery bubbling and the negative cable smoking.
Wow this thread is getting interesting. Sounds like something is grounding the positive side of battery. Check to see if some metal part is not shorting out positive post at starter. This is truly a strange one and you did nothing anyone would have done to check driven components?! I am watching this thread, keep us posted and the best of luck. Rob
To keep everyone in the loop . . . both issues in this thread were resolved.
1. The noise at startup ended up being a worn idler pulley in the AC drive belt system. Funny considering the car only has 52,000 miles
2. The reason the car wouldn't shut off and also tried to start when the battery was reconnected was because something was grounding across the positive side of the starter.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions which ultimately led to the resolution of my problems.

Glad to hear you got it all figured out and back on the road

I just resolved the same noise issue as you last week. It was either the ac idler or tensioner. Not sure which one but I replaced both and the belt and it was fixed. Mine was a 99 with 41,000. Surprising something like that doesn't last longer. I know they are old cars but, you wouldn't think time on the vehicle would matter much. More so miles. Glad you got both your issue fixed.
