Cable looks good on transmission end , and shifter end, cable moves back and forth when I shift .could it be possible sheath that covers cable slipped ?
I don't trust dealers , how much do you think it will cost
Mine was just under $500.00. If I have a cable problem within the next year (not very likely as the original lasted 15 years) I can get it fixed at no charge at any Chevrolet dealership.
If you are five states away and you have a problem your specialty shop will also fix it at no charge. All you have to do is get the car to them.

Just dealt with this. the cable sheath came out of its mount on one end preventing the shifter from working properly.
Had to drop the exhaust and tunnel plate to change it.
I had to replace the shift cable on my 2000 C-5. If you cant get it on a lift to remove the exhaust and tunnel plate find a local tranny shop with some Vette experience. I bought the cable from Rock Auto and had a local shop do the labor. $59 for the part and $190 for the labor. I removed the shift console and hand shifted the tranny with cable from park into drive. The shop was ready so I could drive it directly onto the lift since shifting it with the cable again would be a problem. The old cable had a bend in it, replacement was only option, back on the road.
Good move replacing the cable. I replaced the plastic bushing on the shift lever earlier this year. Thought I was all set for 6 bucks, but then it failed again 2 months later, luckily it came off in my driveway. Looking back I'm sure the cable problem was the culprit and was putting pressure on that bushing causing it to fail again.
