Either I just got robbed by UPS...or shipping is even crazier than I thought. Just sold (4) OEM Speedline wheels on eBay for $500. I figured shipping would cost about $100 so I included "free shipping" to the buyer. Just got back from my local UPS Store...$230 later...even with a AAA discount! Did I just get robbed? 4 rims (no tires) in 2 boxes. Live & you learn.

Unless you have a business account with UPS they are VERY expensive to use for shipping. Business account would have paid around $100 to ship those.
I almost bought rims off a forum member a couple months ago and he estimated it'd cost $100 in shipping. That's why I thought i'd be about that much. He must've had a business account.

I've shipped both wheels in boxes and wheel/tires - - ridiculous - - but prices seem like they've increased significantly over the past couple years regardless of having a 'business account' . . . .
If they did the boxing, it may not be too far off though still quite high none the less. I have bought two sets of wheels for my car but I drove to meet the seller and pick them up. My only experience with wheels was when I bought 4 20" wheels and tires from a QX56 for my Titan pickup and the seller only charged me $200.00 for the freight. He may have done as you and got a surprise at the shippers counter.
I have received other items at a extremely good rate shipped from people who work for large companies that ship a large volume of goods and maybe that explains the lower cost. Maybe BigAss could have helped with that?
As another for instance, I recently purchased 4 LG GT2 coilovers and had them shipped from Las Vegas and it cost me $80.00 for one box. But I couldn't have driven to get them so I had to pay the piper.
While the unpolished thinspokes aren't frowned on as bad as wagon wheels I think you got about all they were worth as nice as they were. I doubt anyone would have paid $730.00 for them. Now if you could have got the $500.00 on a local sale, different story.
We're moving this year and I've been selling some stuff on ebay, I'm shocked at how much shipping costs these days!
Just shipped an item today I sold on eBay. I was thinking like $5.25 but USPS charge was twice that.
I would guess about $100 for two boxes containing rims, maybe FED-EX would have been cheaper?

Sometimes it pays to check on what shipping might be before agreeing to having it free. UPS/FEDEX, etc all have gotten very expensive, even for relatively small items. As mentioned above, sometimes shipping by Greyhound has turned out to be very reasonable.
I ship out of an independent agent to UPS. Not long ago I sent a stock Z06 air cleaner assembly from NJ to Montana. I gave it away, just pay for the shipping. I figured $25, the person sent me $30 to be safe. I get to the shipping agent and he tells me its almost $50. I took it to a friend who ships from his business, it was less than $20. The shipping agent explained to me that UPS has recently changed how they charge. It is not so much the weight that is the factor, it is now determined by the size of the package. He told me I should try to make the package smaller, because it was so light. Unfortunately the box was barely bigger than the part. So don't over pack anything you send now, it's going to cost you big time.
I have a side business, Guitar repair, building and customizing so I ship quit a bit, not only in the US but overseas as well. 9 times out of 10 USPS is the cheapest out of all of them. Believe it or not !
Several years ago, I purchased a very heavy IBM typewriter on Ebay...to fill out 1099 misc. forms for the branch. Nobody wanted it (an auction) so I paid $5.00 for it with "free shipping". Can't imagine what the shipping was on that purchase.(large & heavy)
