It is/ was a crappy plain ole foam rubber and when it gets wet, it gets sopping wet. If you WASH the engine, foam rubber or not, water will usually enter the knock sensor wells.

YES,,, It helps keep dirt out of the valley BUT,, It DOES NOT work very well and I know for sure that water can and does enter that area "EASILY"!

97-2000 LS1 Early intake:

As you can see from the impressions on the foam rubber that they do not seal the Knock Sensor plugs. Only a small area. Water can easily run under the steam piping to the under side of the valley plate.

2001+ or ZO6 Intake:

That's what I was thinking (after I installed the intake without the foam), and have been wondering ever since....

I was under the impression that the foam was there to keep the steam pipes from vibrating against the manifold, which would cause wear on both pieces. You can see the impressions left on the LS1 intake foam. Some evidence also on the Z06 manifold.

The indentation in the foam on the LS6 manifold is from the wiring harness that goes to the knock sensors, not a coolant pipe.

2001+ does not have the steam crossover piping. There are block off plugs in the rear steam holes and no piping in the center. Only the crossover pipe in the front.

The dent in the foam is from a small knock sensor harness.
