Now a 996 turbo equals thumbs up Porsche is just to expensive to maintain and it seems like they all have at least one major problem that if not repaired before it fails the vehicle might as well be thrown away. The 996 has a internal (ims) engine bearing that can fail and ruin the whole engine. It cost more to rebuild the engine than the car is worth. The worst part is there is no warning sign they just suddenly scatter.
Lol, my 997 has cost me exactly one oil change and an air filter in the 15 months that I've had it, not too bad really. I would be more concerned about bore scoring than IMS issues on the M96 and M97 engines but yes, having a catastrophic engine failure would not be fun since a replacement engine is around $20k.

The term is GERNADE...You never know when but it will kill your wallet!!
I remember seeing this the first time but can't believe I didn't respond. I will now. If I was offered a Miata I would say no thank you. I'd drive a mustang before a Miata and I don't like mustangs!
hah! this thread is awesome. guess i need to respond as i sold an 02 miata and turned around and bought the vette last summer. Sold it for 1,500 more than i bought it for so i can't complain. Red vert, LS trim. I'll probably get killed but loved the car. SUPER reliable, and a blast to drive. No, definitely not fast but cornered like it was on rails. Guys thought it was a chick car and i got crap all the time from my muscle car friends. But judging by all the looks the car got from girls i guess that was true! (i'm happily married so didn't go any farther than waves and smiles ) Corvette is definitely more fun to drive though. Wouldn't hesitate at all to own a miata if i just wanted a fun summer driver and didn't care about the power. Go ahead and start flamin!

I drove a friends Miata just to keep it running while he was down with cancer. Liked it and it reminded me so much of my MG in the late '60's. And, to be honest was looking for a good one before buying a friends C4 last year. Which led to selling it this March and buying my C5 as a birthday present.
Would I even go back to Miata? Really don't think so. ;-) But, I love all cars and trucks and even more so, Sport and Adventure motorcycles. ;-)
New member as of today.
Spent a year on miata.net. Why? I sold my 07 STI and was looking for a cheaper car to modify for street and trackdays.
My wife told me I could use her car, a 2001 SE Miata, She bought in 2003. After a lot of research I came to a few conclusions. Miatas are lite so it does not take alot of HP to make fairly fast.
To make a Miata really fast takes an engine rebuild (weak rods) and a turbo. You are turboing a non turbo car that is not designed for much HP. I figured around $15000 to get it trackable to the point of the 07 STI.
You can go cheaper, but this is where I drew the line. This does not take into account the glass transmission. Remember car not designed for power. I figured there would be trust issues driving it on the street.
To fix all this you can install a V8. In short a late model Camaro drive train and a Cadillac rear end. Doing the math I figured $25000 doing it correctly. This does not take into account the major time involved and the need to buy a few tools.
A major drawback for me was I would not be able to pass a broom stick test. I am only 5'9, but with helmet my head was way too high. To remedy this you need to sit on the floor, or buy a seat that sits on the floor. Pricing seats was a wake-up for me as a decent Miata seat was getting into the $1000 range and I was not sure it would solve the problem. I know, where there is a will there is a way, but I am not looking for a giant project.
Miatas even though they are slow are a lot of fun to drive. I just did not want to get tennis elbow point cars by at HPDEs. So I made modification plans and searched for other vehicles. Looked at BRZs/FRS/86. Still to expensive to buy and like the Miata a leap of faith on making it fast. 370Zs are hard to find and not cheap. I have looked at Corvettes, but the price turned me off and the only ones I had ever driven were C3s. I do not really care for the C3s. C4s are cheap, but lets face it they are a product of the 80s and alot of junk was made in the 80s so another project. C5s have about bottomed out and with mileage you could find a car guy that spent big money on heads and cam that is ready to move on for peanuts. Finally found one semi close by that fit the bill. After a drive I could have kicked my butt for staying away for so long. Loved it, so I took it home, all for less then the budget of anything else.
Hey guys, this is recycle13s fiancé (when you read this babe, I'm sorry.. Was just trying to help. I'm making steak & baked potatoes for dinner just the way you like it).
Redcycle13 is a corvette man through & through owning many z06 vettes, road race and track vettes over the years. Recently a young girl ran a red light and hit us, totaling out his baby, a 1200HP c5 corvette he built from the ground up and, owned over 10 years. He likes power.
Now he's thinking about getting a 2016 Miata convertible. He's never owned a Miata or test drove one. If any of you guys have ever debated this decision, owned or track drove a Miata could you leave a comment on your personal experience. Also what you see as pros or cons or maybe which c5, c6, or c7 would be cheaper than a Miata. Thank you guys! I appreciate any feedback you have to offer!
I owned a 94' Miata M Edition prior to getting my 2000 FRC. The Miata is a blast to drive and was a vast improvement over the Triumph Spitfire I had prior to it. Having said this though, the Corvette actually gets better highway mileage than the Miata did and an extra 217 hp doesn't hurt either. And no matter what you do to boost the output of that 1.8 liter engine in the Miata it will never give you the sensation of what the Corvette with Borla Stingers does when you turn the key.
I have two friends who own Miatas. One of them is like 6’4” and maybe 325 lbs. LoL. I always find a way to mention that a Corvette is like a "Man’s" version of a Miata.
