Hey guys, this is recycle13s fiancé (when you read this babe, I'm sorry.. Was just trying to help. I'm making steak & baked potatoes for dinner just the way you like it).
Redcycle13 is a corvette man through & through owning many z06 vettes, road race and track vettes over the years. Recently a young girl ran a red light and hit us, totaling out his baby, a 1200HP c5 corvette he built from the ground up and, owned over 10 years. He likes power.
Now he's thinking about getting a 2016 Miata convertible. He's never owned a Miata or test drove one. If any of you guys have ever debated this decision, owned or track drove a Miata could you leave a comment on your personal experience. Also what you see as pros or cons or maybe which c5, c6, or c7 would be cheaper than a Miata. Thank you guys! I appreciate any feedback you have to offer!
I voted Miata just for giggles. I've driven one but I've never tracked any car. I have a lot of respect for that car, it is a lot of fun, but if your guy built a 1200HP vette I'm not sure why he'd go for the Miata.
Having said that, my reason for buying a C5 instead of a Miata boils down to one simple fact: the trunk in the C5 is much larger, making the car much more practical. Both are great cars, one is more useful than the other.
This is not an analysis that many here will subscribe to, but it's mine.

You better do more that that sister.
There are a few guys in here that track their miata, but they are build to the hilt like your old C5.
in my opinion....your going to spend all that $$ and take the hit when the little underpowered issues crops up...will he turbo it, track it...
They are zippy little fun cars, (brother has one) but very hard to go from a vette to that. I tried a 350z and ran back to the vette asap.
If I was in your boat and looking for something new...C6's be it base, GS or Z06 is a great bargain right now.
oh...you should know the rules about hacking an account... you must post your pic.
Ive actually ridden as a passenger in one. Not my cup of tea but they do handle nice.
I've had a C2, C3, C4, 2 C5s (98 Coupe NM6 and an 02 ZO6), C6 Coupe NM6 Z51 and a 11 Grand Sport Vert.
Hands down, I would have to recommend another Vette (C5 or C6)
My wife calls her 11 Grand Sport her LEXAS C6!! Heated seats and all the other comforts.. Engine and drivetrain mods are PLENTIFUL and easy to milk more power out of the engine!
When I first read the post, I was going to make some sarcastic remarks but, I really feel bad for you and your husband and hope you sort this out soon. Go drive some C6s and that Miata. I'm very sure that you will make a decision quickly..
Good luck and please keep us up-dated on your decisions.
How humiliated would you feel if you got passed by a Miata on the track?
Why do you think I don't go to the track? Same reason I don't go bowling when another couple invites us out. I'm not good at it, and If I lost to my wife I would have to kill myself.
If she wants to compete we can go to the gym and have a bench press competition or a deadlift competition so I can dominate and she has zero chance of winning.
I bought my convertible from a guy who switched to a Mazda, it fit his retirement condo better and new cars are less problems. PLus he didn't want to investigate the clutch Noi$e on his money.
I have only heard good things about the new high performance Miatas, but that's it, no personal experience.. I used to have an Rx7 sport model, and it was a good car and company. Simple to maintain, parts and service at normal places and prices, repairs were much like a Toyota. I like a small sports car, easier to drive and park. THe first thing people told me about the corvette was that they were designed to be assembled quickly, not for easy or cheap repairs.
For me, that kind of power would be too much work, unless I wanted to race only. Seeing a fish out of water type car on the street makes me wonder what the guy is trying to prove, and why would he think I care .
I am more of a throw a picnic basket in the convertible and have fun guy. Running a high involvement cars is not for me, so perhaps my viewpoint is not super valid here. If I had that kind of car, I would be happy to try something that required less from me. I don't race, wouldn't be able to handle that much power real well anyway. I win when I have fun. I do require contests and the occasional victories, as does any man, but don't use cars for that.

So you'd rather your wife not have fun than have a small chance of losing at something? Life lesson time: Happy wife, happy life.
In that case, how about if your wife passed you on the track in a Miata? If you were smart, you'd let her do so
Friend of mine had an S2000 he built up that could beat up on almost anything on the road at the time. That thing was a beast! Wicked fast and almost broke my neck accelerating. If your man wants small but fast, this is a better, more manly alternative.
Fair enough. After all, it's all about what others think of you, right?
You have it 100% backwards Black 02; got me and my comment all wrong.
To me it looks like a car designed for a girl, in other words it's not an attractive car for my taste, nor what I would imagine a guy driving or liking one. Compare it to a pink car if you will; I would only imagine a girl driving a pink car. To me a Miata's styling is the same as a car being pink, it's a girls car color.
Hoping I don't offend anybody, not my intention, just my taste. I also don't like red for a Corvette, we all have our own taste.
If I cared at all what other people thought about my car I wouldn't drive a Corvette. Talk about the wrong car to drive, at least with my mindset (I just want a nice looking car that's fun to drive, and believe it or not, do not like the attention this car gets). I have considered selling a number of times mainly for that reason.
Peace.
The 16 Miata is a extremely well balanced machine they are a blast to drive and are cheap to maintain. But going from a 1200 hp c5 he will not be happy unless he heavily modifies it. The skyactiv engine and transmission have not been proven yet under high horse power situations. To swap the drivetrain out with something different would be the ruination of the car as it will ruin the balance of the car.
My conclusion is he would love the Miata for about 2 months then when the fun little car wears off he will start to desire a more powerful machine again.
I owned a 2008 Miata with a retractable hardtop. I absolutely loved it. I sold it a year after the C4 and bought my C5.
It's a real toss-up. They both have their own merits, but I guess you see what I drive. I guess the Vette won out.
