Well, I do not believe there is an over-rev protection when downshifting, only for upshifting. You might want to see if any codes have been set on the DIC and post them up if there is.
Otherwise, someone who has more knowledge of these cars than I do will hopefully post up and give some more advice.

I don't think any codes are thrown my friend said it may be the spark plugs but we don't know 3rd hear was almost pagged out and he threw into 2nd thinking it was 4th it revved up and braked down there was a big flame that came out of the driver side pipe then it runs like u have it in 5th gear trying to take off, I researched that it could have messed with the timing or possibly bent a valve , it would still drive but it would barley go.
First thing I'd do is to take off the valve cover and do a visual inspection. Check for any looseness, broke springs or anything else out of the ordinary.
Run a compression check on all of the cylinders. Hopefully it wasn't a valve bending or braking off and maybe have put a hole in a piston.
If there is an AutoZone store nearby, they will have compression tester for rent. You put down a deposit and when you bring it back in good condition, you get the deposit back.
Pull the pushrods. Roll each one across a flat surface like a large mirror. Most likely one is bent. They usually bend before valves do so that's where you start looking. Easy to change too.
This is exactly why I always say use stock pushrods with big cams. They are a weak link and should be left in place instead of hardened rods.
