Had the "real" fix done by GM quite a few years ago, whereby column lock assembly was completely removed. Starting 3 weeks ago, when the weather got cold, I now have a Service Column Lock message every time I start the car. Thankfully, I have no other issues, none of the reduced power, etc., but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and/or knows how to get rid of this message popping up on the DIC.
The GM Fix SUCKS and eventually, it will fail and leave you stranded.
Get the LMC5, install it and be DONE with the whole mess!
I didn't think the column lock would get me with my 98. OH BOY was I wrong!
I installed the Corvettes of Houston Column Lock Bypass and its been good since Same in my 02 Z
The LMC5 is a MUCH better solution with more options to resolve your issue.
Let me be clear: The fix I had done indeed removed the plate and locking mechanism completely, and it was done at the dealer, per the last TIB for my MN6. And, after that was done, I sold my bypass, as I no longer needed it.
The ONLY thing I am seeing, as of very recently, is the message on the DIC. There are no symptoms of the original column lock behavior which includes killing fuel. I was hoping someone might know why the message reared its ugly head recently. I will try charging my battery, but I'd be surprised of that's the culprit. If that doesn't do it, and no one knows why this might be happening, aside from a low battery, it might be the cold weather. In fact, in the middle of our hot summers in Northern California, I get service abs/traction control all the time. When the weather cools, they stop. I've noticed that my C5 is quite temperature sensitive. :-(
