Since the weather here is doing what it normally does this time of year , I am starting to do some maintenance on the C5 .
Starting with both belts . Which got me to looking at the harmonic balancer . With engine running the lower pulley doesn't wobble . Is there anything else about it that would indicate that it needs replaced ? What would I look for to tell if it already has been replaced ?
It is a 98 and has about 93000 on it .
I replaced mine last summer with 70,000 miles as preventative maintenance. I used a powerbond pulley and an arp bolt. It is good piece of mind knowing that it is done.

I'm pushing 60k on my 04. I have noticed a oh so slight, and I mean very slight wobble on mine. Something to keep in the back of my numbskull !
Two things can happen to the balancer
one) is the bolt backs out
two) the elastomer starts to deteriorate.. the elastomer is a rubber sub straight that bonds the inner balancer from the outer pulley. the balancer is a three piece unit bonded into one unit
the elastomer can start to flake off in chunks, and separate the inner from the outer.

The balancer issue carried over to the C6 ,so GM surely knew they had a problem.I realize that in the production world pennies add up to dollars. With your insight into the automotive design of the C5, why does a company the size of GM not act a little faster to correct these types of issues?I know it doesn't help any of us who own a C5 ,just curious.Thank you for all the knowledge you share with us.
You wont find too many C5's that have to replace a balancer during the three year warranty period.. GM is not responsible for spending more money than design appropriate. The reason if everything lasted for 20 years the cost of the car would be outside the demographic. just compare the cost of a GM balancer at 80 dollars to a Power Bond at 250 dollars and an ATI at 399 dollars.. can you see that these are 300% and 500 % increase.. now take the 6000 parts in a C5 and add 300% to the cost to manufacture. a 40,000 dollar cost to manufacture C5 would cost 120,000 dollars.
So you can see why budget restrains are the reason parts don't last forever..
However, for a 20 year old design these C5's can still be very relevant both in reliability and aesthetic appeal.
I was shot down for a revision that would add less than a dollar to the cost of each unit. it didn't reduce weight, and an effective design was already in production.
