I am getting rid of the S4 no matter what. Between the car payments and Virginia's awesome personal property tax its just to much with things that have changed for me in the last 6 months or so. (The personal property tax on the car is 1400 per year)

I basically Im looking to take the cash I get out of it and just use that with no payments, and very low property tax on it.

And I have owned a C4 and driven a C5, but its been awhile. I dont mind the harsher ride, and in fact I perfer it. As great at the S4 is, I have never loved this car. I know its apples and oranges, thats why I didnt ask for a comparison between the two cars.

VA charges a personal property tax of $1400 a year on vehicles? I've never heard of such a thing. That's highway robbery!

Exactly. Didnt know it was going to be that much when I bought the car, my last car was like $400 per year. It is some percentage of what the value the car.

Its BS. I payed the high sales tax on the car when I bought it, and now every year I get raped by the state again. Makes me want to setup a BS company in another state and register my car there.

That would be enough to make me move out of the state...

I drive mine daily except in winter. 30 miles each way, manual transmission drop top into Boston from the exurbs. I love it. YMMV.

Have you driven a C5? Compared to an AUDI S4...IMO you'll be very disappointed from a daily driver perspective....

I have daily driven a C5 for the last 6 years....and in OCT i purchased a 14 S5 6 speed.....I gotta be honest man, i was missing out...Sure its not as "Fast" as the C5..but it sure feels like great luxury car that i LOVE daily driving.

Now lets get this clear...im not saying the C5 is TERRIBLE to DD, but compared to an AUDI for DD purposes...apples to oranges...there is juts no comparison as far as comfort and practicality...

American Forums are and will always be the most biased places to ask questions like this....go test drive some C5's you're interested in...

Can you daily drive a C5? Yes, but you can daily anything if you want it bad enough.
Far from a 20 year old GM rattle box. Find a 20 year old Audi then we'll talk.

For up to 20K
Take the value of the car as assessed by DTA, divide by 100, and multiply the result by the tax rate (which is $4.57 for most vehicles).

After that, the full normal tax rate.

His Audi is worth more than 20K so he was getting hit hard. I live in VA and i think I payed around $475 for my 01 with 35K on the clock.

OP your comment about not dumping the S4 in the winter for a vett is silly. You will have the vett next winter, and every winter after that no?

If anything AWD is in demand, sell it and get the vett cheap. Best time to buy, you will have to live with the vett in the winter anyway.

Prices go up around 2.5K in the spring/summer around here for vetts.

Also please consider the sales tax (5%) you pay on a new car, so if this is just a short term fix you will only be saving $700. That will probably whittle away when you find all the little things wrong with a 10+ year old car.

This type of car isn't for everyone. I enjoy the raw, race car like feel. Some do not.

Basically this will be my DD and either will put winter tires on the car in the winter, or will get a cheap beater for the winters if I dont want to drive this. I have done winter tires on my old G8 and it handled fine in most any snow that we get in Northern VA.

And I have actually started to try to sell the Audi pricing out carmax and such first and if needs be will list it myself. Would perfer just to sell it to a dealer and be done with it and not have to spend a lot of time meeting with people and answering questions.

That's RAPE
I've never heard of "personal property tax" on a car so I looked it up, seems to be a single state that has it.....yours
In Iowa, I pay $100 registration a year for TWO C5s and both have custom Veteran plates on them.

I pay personal property tax on cars in MA. They start out high on a new car (circa $1,000) but go down quickly as the car ages.

To a point made earlier, I have no rattles in my C5. It may not be as luxurious as an Audi, but it is solid.

Mine was a DD for almost 13 years.

Snow was a bit difficult, but with A/S tires and learning to start off from 2nd or 3rd, its doable.

Learning how to pack it is another story.

The looks you get at home depot when you are loading 2x4s into it are rather entertaining...

Did not buy for a DD. Or as a GQ as you call it. It is well maintained to last and and to have fun with. And I hope that Audi and you are capable of my GM rattle traps longevity

I daily drove 3 series BMW's for the 17 years preceding my DD 04Z. No complaints about going the opposite way that you did, every day spring, summer and fall puts a smile on my face.
And my car has no rattles, etc. Not flaming you, just offering another view. I get your side, I was there. I'll tell you that for me it got boring. My Z never bores me.
Comfort and practicality out the window.

I thought I was the only one thinking about the S4 to Vette in terms of luxury and overall feel (interior niceties and not talking about performance). It's funny cause I was actually considering trading my daily 01Z for an S4/5 and if I were going the other way I'm not entirely sure that would've happened. It seems Audis are par for the Vette community, pretty interesting.

Not to mention someone else already pointed out your desire to wait out this winter, but you're going to have the C5 every winter afterwards. Buy now and use whatever savings over Spring/Summer prices to get A/S season tires.

I will be honest, if you were expecting a smooth ride from the C5 then I would move on If I were you.
