99 FRC. Ever since I've owned it it's been 14.4-14.5 volts. Driving today it's 13.6-13.7 volts. Think it's trying to tell me it's on it's way out?? If so, where to get a good replacement?? Thanks.
I'd first recommend getting the alternator tested, and then do a search on alternators in both C5 General and Ct Tech & Perf. sections there are several threads addressing the replacement issues with 97-2000 C5 alternators. Several people recommend keeping your old unit and having it rebuilt. Below is a recent thread addressing alternator replacement, click on the link and then click the link in post #2
My voltage reads 14.0-14,1 consistently. A couple weeks ago we were at the NCM. Raining steady. Went out to start the car after the tour, about 4 hrs, and the battery was dead. Left the parking lights etc on by mistake (obviously). After jumping the car, the voltage read 12.9-13.2. . I had visions of a failed alternator and battery and all sorts of other nightmarish scenarios flowing through my mind about being stuck 1000 miles from home for days awaiting parts. After about 10-15 minutes the voltage had crept up to 13.5. We went to the local Chevrolet dealer. They tested the charging system and told me that 13.5 was normal and all systems were go, so we drove on. After about 20 miles the voltage was back to 14.0. No problems since. So I guess I'll agree with the others and recommend you get the charging system checked before changing parts unnecessarily. There may have been a big load on the charging system at the time it read low.
