I have a 99 with a 6 spd and the shifter has started making a buzzing sound while accelerating if I put my hand on the shifter all noise goes away. I've already replaced the bushings on the lower shift box and that hasn't helped this time. I'm running a stock shifter that has been shortened with 50K on it if that makes a difference. Anyone have any ideas on what to look for or how to fix it.
Thanks Bob

Has the shift **** been changed (or even off with the "demon key" removed)?
I recently had this very problem with a Hurst white ****, I pulled it off in favor of the factory unit, but wrapped the threads with Teflon tape, then threaded the **** on....buzzing gone!

If the "demon key" (the metal wedge that goes in the top of the ****, underneath the plastic cover) is missing or loose, it can cause a rattle.
I did just change from a white hurst **** to a black hurst **** when I changed the bushings on the lower box, there is no demon key as I cut the shifter off below the key way and now use a lock nut below the ball so I'm sure that it is more than tight.
Is the rubber sound deadening mat in place on top of the shifter box. If it is missing that is your problem! Impossible to imagine the noise without the mat....

Yeah I put the sound deadening mat back in when I put it all back together

Mine was plenty tight as well, with and without a jam-nut, still buzzed. Change back to a "known" ****, see if the noise persists.
If it still does it, try the Teflon tape trick....
Put the white **** back on and no more noise even stopped put the black **** back on and sure enough started makin' noise, put white one back on and no more noise the rest of the way home. I would never have believed this without seeing it myself. Now gotta find a fix for the black ****, I think I read somewhere about putting superglue around the outside of the threaded insert and letting it run down into it.
I got some Locktite Professional Superglue and tried putting the glue around the threaded insert, took about 15 minutes for it to quit seeping down the insert, let it dry over night and reinstalled it in the car. Worked great no more noise, never would have thought the **** could make that much noise, glad I was able to fix it.
