Yeah, 91 recommended but 87 is okay according to the manual. I run 87 for my normal commute and fill up with 91 for long trips, no problems so far.

so if you do have a hole in the piston did you not notice it running poorly?... I might have missed that in the thread somewhere... also looking at the pics again in the last one I can see a round dot in the bottom right corner, is that the hole you are referring to?... if so, that looks like the mark all the pistons have to note their orientation when being installed... the rest of it looks like carbon but it's hard to say

not my pic but you can see the dimple marks on all the pistons, this is to make sure they get installed the right way... also you can see the one on the far right has a busted ringland, if this is what happened to your motor then it would look like this

Haven’t pulled the head yet. Still runs fine just has an intake full of oil now. And drips a little from rear main when I get on it. I’m told, based on the pics, that there is likely a crack in the ring and that the little black mark is where hot gas has been leaking through. The one pic of the top of the piston looks like maybe material flaked. I’m told the smart thing is to bore like 10 over and do pistons and rings.

You could just take the short block to the machine shop and have them replace the pistons. You may as well use new bearings, oil pump, seals and timing chain. Basically a rebuild kit.

You could rebuild it yourself but some of the work requires tools that can get expensive.

You will need a shop to press the wrist pins out and in and they will have to install the cam bearings. During a rebuild the cylinders should be checked with a dial bore gauge for both roundness and taper. The front and rear covers should be installed using special alignment tools or they will leak. Cheap ring compressors are a PITA and you could brake a ring installing them.

but he then runs into the same thing I did, "well if I am going to do it I might as well upgrade....." I don't care who you are its impossible to talk yourself into doing the bare minimum if you are going to keep it.

when I had the heads in my Z06 redone the first question I got was, "you wanna do a cam?" now's the time!

"no, no, no...just fix the heads....I have one modified car already"
I am good with headers and exhaust on the Z....it was tempting but easier having a second Vette.

sucks as I have been here done this so I know what he is dealing with...decisions, decisions

I bought an FRC for cheap because of trans issues, needed some reverse work. The "while it's all out bug" bit and I somehow ended up with a built dry sump LS7 and a built drivetrain in the shop

This is the cheapest not the smartest, smart should be a full rebuild since you have to take everything apart, same GM internals.

The cam and heads can be done reasonably and reliably, especially if you use LS6 parts.
An LS6 with CIA, slightly higher compression, and mildly ported heads and a tune can make 450 FWHP. More with headers.
This set up is reliable and easy on the valve-train.

No replacement for displacement. There are plenty of options.

depends on how much... an equal amount on each then yeah... since the op is trying not to spend a lot he's probably better off rebuilding what he has as long as it isn't trashed... going up to a 6.2/7.0 is just going to cost him more money and open up another can of worms, especially if he isn't going to be doing all the work besides the engine machining and assembly

I have listed each possible way to fix, from bare bones to ***** out (my engine for example)

I've seen lots of L92 setups go for 2-3k which is a great middle of the road upgrade. Which would probably also be the easiest even if he isn't doing the work.

Good luck brother with whatever you decide and sorry to hear about your Dad. There is life after a blown engine...mine has gone from LS1 to LS6 @ 88k and then to a Lingenfelter LS2 (500HP pkg) @ 118k.

Thank you. The kind thoughts are appreciated. Yea there is life after. Kind of funny how stuff always seems to hit all at once.

How was your experience working with Lingenfelter? Did you ship them your car?

I can sympathize.

My dad passed three months ago and I had to go up north for a week only to come home to a hurricane. With all that going on didn't get to go through the grieving process. Missed three weeks work and now my transmission is acting up.

Some how we always pull through by the grace of God.
