Probably, he is a corvette specialist though, he has anywhere between 20 and 30 vettes in his shop at all times....

The carpet was what flamed up, after it smoldered through the fiberglass.

On a side note neutron, have you seen this before?

May be time for mini tubs.......
me either, I couldn't tell one bike from the next just looking at them rolling down the street... busas are easy to spot because of the hump behind the rider but other than that they all look the same to me... I have never seen that happen before, can you stick a camera under the car and snap some pics?... I'm trying to picture it in my mind but I don't see how the exhaust could get close enough to catch on fire unless it was literally touching the tub... since you said the drivetrain was out of the car I'm wondering if they left a shop rag or something up in there that would cause a fire

Yes..... plus I keep putting off the fire extinguisher.........I was very lucky, I just happened to be coming home from grocery store with three gallons of water in the trunk I picked up to fill my fish tank that leaked today while I was at work.

No rag, as I said earlier when on the lift Tuesday looking for the knocking noise, I could see where it had made marks under tub, was told that is "normal" obviously not.

It is right at the top front of bend over axle of axle back.

ok, hmm... well the lg's are slip fit from the collectors to the axle back, maybe they didn't slip the pipes together far enough which would essentially make the midsection a bit too long thus causing the over axle pipe to make contact with the tub?

I think it is just the opposite maybe? too far forward....pipes cut too short perhaps?, if you remember (probably not) I had a problem of pipes coming apart a year or so ago. I was asking for opinions and I think you had suggested a wider clamp. Maybe they just cut too much off and that's why it touches?

I think you called it correctly, you were both lucky -- and sensible. Take credit for paying attention and staying calm in a bad situation.
My '73 caught fire from a bad alarm wire back in '85. Once that resin starts to burn it's self sustaining big time. Glass melted, thin steel vaporized. Not pleasant.

one of the two, either it was adjusted too long or too short depending on where it's making contact... if it was the shops doing I would make them take care of it... maybe do a mini tub or fiberglass the whole area flat and maybe do a c6 style exhaust later on haha

I was thinking about it this morning it was awfully late last night, you’re right it would have to be too long like you said, where it hit the floor.

Maybe in the triple digits the car would start pulling, (a crotch rocket's aero is terrible compared to a C5) but in a stoplight to stoplight drag race, I don't think it would be close.

OP: Very weird scenario. When I saw your pic, I assumed that was a cigarette you dropped, but yeah, a fire almost started in your rear cargo space ? What could have caused that ? Very strange.
i should clarify, when I said heavy rider I was referring to someone like my 308 pound friend, who rode a 600. He slows down my damn car when he's riding with me

its hard to run 10's with 100 horsepower when your combined weight is close to that of a Mazda mx5!

So I dropped it off today, he thought it was too close but kept saying how hot the pipes got based on the bluefish tint on them and a spot on both mufflers?

Can anyone speek to this concern? Or is he looking for an out?

I can't be the only one with this outcome.... if it was just getting hot, doesn't it have to be a clearance problem?

Have them add some heat shield under the trunk.

I just can't see the pipes getting hot enough to do that kind of damage, even with the added heat from the blower it just doesn't seem likely unless it was physically touching

Thanks..... It's all good, anything that keeps it going a while until maybe someone who has seen it before chimes in. My mechanic is downplaying the location thing and concentrating on the amount of heat based on the color of pipes. I can assure you all....I don't care who is at fault, he has agreed to take care of it. He should know me by now but I think he is worried because of the normal clients he deals with. I just want anyone who has seen something like this to chime in. I may post it in FI section as many of those guys race cars and I think I probably had my car about as hot as a track car with several wot pulls in a row.

It was a little about racing the cycle

that's the thing, I've done the same with mine on many occasions and never had a problem with my exhaust getting that hot... not long ago I ran my buddies cbr1000 3 times in a row up to 160 or so, still nothing... you would also think the airflow past the exhaust in the rear section would be adequate enough at high speed to keep the heat down

To get that hot and melt/singe what it did, I'd park the car completely until the exhaust issue is settled. An extinguisher can't stop a hot spot unless hit directly. You're running a chance everytime you drive.
