Default Lucky......I guess?

The horror

So while having a bit of fun with a really fast crotch rocket (he pretty much smoked me, quite literally) I kept up for a bit but both of us have really quick acceleration and hit way to high of speeds to stay in it very long. It worked out to be three or four lights. After the last pull I started to smell plastic burning, I thought it may be a wire or something up against the headers. I pulled over and checked under the hood and found nothing but I started to see smoke coming from in car towards back looked under car and saw nothing??? Then I opened the trunk and saw this ........

I say lucky because I happened to have water in my trunk, I went out to get distilled water for my fish tank, it blew a hose off and leaked a bunch of water out and I did not have enough R.O. water to fill it back up, so off to the store I went. It was a good excuse to drive my car I just got back. Any how is this very common?

Wow! Glad you found it before more burned! Do you know what caused it?

What is your exhaust setup?

My SLP mufflers have singed the bottom of my rear bumper way up under where it's not noticeable. I've been meaning to put a fire extinguisher in my Corvette, and now I will definitely be doing so, maybe more than 1. I put aluminum HVAC tape over the edges of my bumper where it's close to the exhaust. It's the same stuff we use in race cars to seal up holes in the pans when the interior is ripped out.

Can you get a zoomed out picture, so I can understand this location better to look at mine?

Two things:

1: never seen that before, especially weird since you have the factory ti exhaust so it's not like poor manufacturing from an eBay exhaust.

2: that must have been a REALLY fast crotch rocket because I know a heavier rider on a 600 isn't really much faster than a stock z06, and I'm pretty sure you have 5 or 10 more ponies than me

I can usually stay in front until I back off, but this guy knew how to ride and I have no traction from a stop. Seemed fun at the time.....

Yes factory Ti's, lg long tubes and crossover and gutted lg cats.

Factory Ti's? Something else must have caused that fire like an exhaust leak with flames coming out. Maybe some hot brake pad material.

Nope......I know exactly where it is under car, it is right where exhaust comes over axle, must be a issue with install, just got car back from shop the whole tt and rear cradle was out. There is no exhaust connection there.

You would have to get them really hot. Maybe some dead leaves or something blew up there and caught on fire.

Are you sure ?

I used to have a 600cc Yamaha, I'm pretty sure it would dust a stock Z06. The bike has a much better power to weight ratio. Maybe around 650-700 lbs with a big rider and 110 rwhp. vs like 3500 lbs in the car with a 250 lbs driver, with I'm guessing around 350 rwhp ?

Maybe in the triple digits the car would start pulling, (a crotch rocket's aero is terrible compared to a C5) but in a stoplight to stoplight drag race, I don't think it would be close.

OP: Very weird scenario. When I saw your pic, I assumed that was a cigarette you dropped, but yeah, a fire almost started in your rear cargo space ? What could have caused that ? Very strange.

No, I hate to admit this, but I saw some marks when it was up on the lift, they were looking for some knocking noises and found the exhaust was hitting trans and a bolt on that side. I asked about the marks and was told it was common to see those marks. The shop owner was not there so, I trusted his guys.......obviously there were mistaken.

It was on fire, there were flames, carpet was burning under cargo well cover....... It was the exhaust for sure.

Good thing you smelled the material burning. Could have gotten really bad very fast.

yeah 600's will run 10's and that would kill stock to lightly modded c5's pretty easy... the op's car is pretty modded though and should be able to handle a 600, if I had to guess I'd say it was at least a 1000 or maybe a busa

The funny thing is I have not paid him yet, the bill was not ready. I just got back this week from vacation and went by his shop to pay him but he was not in. I have had car for a couple of weeks.

It gets weirder.......when I went to leave his shop (Tuesday) the day I stopped by, the shift cable went bad right in his parking lot. They ordered the cable right on the spot and put it in on jack stands. They did not have a free lift at that time. When I came back (two hours later) I mentioned the knocking noise to the owner (over the phone) so they freed up a lift to look and that's when I saw the marks. I should have called the owner but I trusted his guys

They may have been thinking of cars not made of fiberglass.

I don't know bikes at all but most of the time it's no problem and I back out but this guy was fast.......I'm still on stock wheels and tire sizes and running Firestones not drag radials. Not enough road to reel him in.

On a side note neutron, have you seen this before?

May be time for mini tubs.......
