I've been putting up with this crap since 1973 when as a rookie Philly Cop I was shot with a .30 caliber rifle in a holdup. Not asking for any sympathy or accolades because I was lucky enough to come home after 6 weeks. Right arm permanently crippled and left has extensive nerve damage. I qualify... Frequently questioned and admonished for parking in an HP spot because I look healthy... I just ignore them but worry about the car getting keyed... This is the world we live in my friends...
Yes there is abuse, however like I said, not all handicaps are apparent. Heart attacks, dysfunctional lungs, and a few other maladies aren't visible to the casual observer. My lung problem has no external indicators, however I still cannot function anywhere near a what a normal person can. I look perfectly normal, until I fall over from lack of oxygen.
Thanks for all the advice, I know it gets abused, most disabled wife's use there husbands handicap when he is not in the car, My wife will not park in a Handicap Spot without me being in the car with her....One time a cop saw that she was looking for a parking spot at the VA since i was going thru another surgery, and he said there are handicap spots open near the building, she said, she's not the one handicap it's my Husband's and he stated, "That is a first for me, that a person is that honest about it" It's the fact people don't ask nice, they are very rude about how they ask and it all stems around the corvette!!!
First, Thank You for your Service!
Second, a big pat on the back to your wife. As many have said, too often a spouse will use the other spouse's disability placard/license plate to their own benefit.
Third, like some others, sometimes I feel awkward driving our Vette and then using a handicapped spot. Some days, we are up to walking the extra distance and at those times we don't park in a HC spot just to avoid the hassle. But, in retrospect, it's silly that it comes to that.
No disrespect intended because I really do appreciate your selflessness in serving our country however, your topic title reminded me of a Tim Wilson song... "Handicap tag on a black corvette"
Google it and I'm certain you'll get a good laugh..
To your topic, I believe people nowadays think they have a right to be in your business and that they've been given authority to share their opinion of it. I call them the narcissistic a&$clowns created by Facebook...
Corvettes are fun cars and you can't be having any fun if your handicapped now can you??

OP, the same thing happened to me when I first got my Vette four years ago.
I parked in a handicapped spot, had my placard hanging from the mirror, and this woman came up to me and said I should park somewhere else, because owning a Corvette isn't something a person with a disability drives.
I politely told her to go **** herself.
Corvette by a country mile! handicapped would need at least 5 cars and the go for it to be competitive!
In all seriousness, it's unfortunate that people are that way. My sister has an autoimmune disease, speaking to her doctor she got a handicapped placard. She doesn't always use the handicap spots as she doesn't need it all the time, but I know some days she does need it. I know she's got some looks but she brushes them off, as like others stated a persons handicap may not always be visible. I know now I always look for anyone parked in the handicap spot to see if they have plates or a placard. 99% of the time they do but I know some people use it as a quick, lazy parking spot. We've used it a few times in my vette, and I'm sure someones stared at it shaking their head. With us being somewhat young (29 & 31) people glare already. I'm sure it doesn't help that her plates read AHAHAHA and mine read HAHALOL

I can only speak for Florida. You must be certified
disabled by a doctor every five years to receive a disabled
permit from the DMV. I am certified disabled.
Yet I show my vette drag race it and autocross it.
My doctors applaud my mobility.
I have never had a stupid person question me.
If it happens I will just laugh at them.
Life us short.
In Dade County (Miami) they have reserved parking for pregnant women. That one is absurd and should be met with resistance and destruction of the signs.

We have parking for hybrids here. As well as the pregnant parking.
No surprise but this system is prone to abuse. While most handicap tags are deserved there are many who get them that shouldn't. At my former job a few friends had them to get close parking spots. The same guys would take the afternoon off to play golf with no cart. Walking and moderate exercise is good for most people. Living in Florida now I see the abuse every day. The family car gets a handicap tag because on member is challenged and the rest of the family uses the car and parks in the front row at Walmart.
I totally agree you will see someone park in a handicapped spot then walk around Walmart or whatever store their at for a few hours. How the hell is that handicapped?
I live in State with just rear plate, and have two friends, one drives C7, and the other C6, both have handicap plates, and I haven't herd war stories about were they park.
Has far has I am concern, you wouldn't have the plate if you didn't need it, so tell them to go blow smoke.
You really don’t have to explain anything to them. If you say anything, just tell them to look at the license plate and then walk away.
My dad had one because of his heart. My heart is worse than his but I don't have an handicapped license or tag.
My wife has had several knee surgeries and has a placard. When we use a handicapped spot, we have never been questioned once we pointed to the tag in the window.
Some people just don't know what makes up a handicap and that all handicaps are not readily visible. Just let them know it is legal and that is all you need to do.

The last ten years of my Mom's life she spent in a wheel chair. It was my responsibility to get her to places she needed to go. She could not drive and had a handicap tag that she kept with her. Many times the handicapped spaces were occupied by cars without tags and by people that by the speed they walked it was obvious they did not really need one. She really did need that parking space and without one it was difficult to get her where we were going. The problem I have is so many people took advantage of the law and talked their doctor into signing off on it just to get their own personal parking space wherever they went. I know several people that did just that.
I would never question anyone using the space with a handicap sticker, but I know for a fact that a lot of people abuse the system and those that really need the spots suffer for it. Been there.
If you need the spot, use it. If not let someone that does need it have it.

In Kansas, If you are rated at 50% disabled or higher from the VA you can get a Disabled Veteran Handicap Plate, I'm a Retired Military (1971-1996) and 100% VA Disabled. You have to get a letter from the VA to verify your disability and then when your license plate is issued, Kansas also issues you a little card for your wallet to carry around with you with just the handicap person name on it. So if a cop checks and you don't have that little card it's a $500 ticket in some places.

I have noticed many places are adding a lot more handicap parking spots. That definitely helps.
