Default Help!

I have a 2001 c5 stock intake and throttle body vararam intake, kooks longtubes, x pipe, z06 ti. It has a cam in it when I bought it I do not know what size. I am thinking of replacing it with a cam and timing chain set. What size cam would you recommend for the stock 241 heads? Would a ls6 intake with a ls2 90 mm tb help as well. I am on a budget so trying not to break the bank. Thanks.

Not sure how to answer you.
1) WHY do you want to change cams? (sound/lope?, horsepower?)
Not sure HOW you will know which way to go ("bigger or smaller" if you don't now what size your current cam is.

2) What is your intended USAGE? What are you going to do with your car?....and for How long (months or years?)?
3) Is resale value.....or cost an issue?
In short what are your starting and ending points?

I........would go to a known performance shop and discuss your goals with them.

BTW, a LS2 90 TB is 4 bolt, and won't bolt up to your LS6 manifold. You can go with a FAST, Dorman, or MSD.

I would like to make 400 RWHP. I plan on keeping the car till the wheels fall off so resale I know I would never get back what I have in it. This is a weekend fairweather car.

Since you have a 2001, I believe you have the same intake as the LS6 so no swap needed there (and money saved!).
63Corvette's comments are good. You really should decide the direction you want to go with your engine. While it's nice to do all improvements at one time, most can't afford to do that. But, what we can all do, is have a plan in place so that the parts, as we add them over time, each complement the other.
Have you tried following up with the previous owner to see if he/she was the one who installed the cam? You may find out that the cam you have is the perfect one for your planned engine mods.
I believe you can get an adapter that will mate the 90mm LS TB to your intake.
The cam you currently have may support the added air flow, but again, hard to say without your knowing the specs of the cam. If your car is going to be down for a couple of weeks when you are doing your work you could pull the cam and see if there is any manufacturers information.
Best wishes with your modding.

Many cam makers have a set of numbers on the cam that will allow you to "decipher" the cam. For instance, a Lunati cam may have either 60511 or 20540711 on it. That would tell you it is the small VooDoo cam for a LS1/LS6 engine. With that information you can find the lift, duration, valve events, etc.

The clutch was burned up in it when I bought it so I am just curious what other stuff could be lurking in wait.

These guys are right, more information is needed....

What I would suggest is start with a good tuner to see what car is doing and if can be improved upon without any parts. You can’t assume it is doing all it can do without more info.

Good luck

To answer all the questions I want something that puts down some power without breaking the bank. As far as changing things out I do not when the cam was put in or other things they have done as far as valve springs and things of that nature. So I guess for my comfort I was going to change eveything as far as cam, lifters, pushrods, timing chain, oil pump, new gaskets, rocker arms, springs the only thing I will not do is cnc the heads. I was looking at the Texas speed torquer v2 cam kit.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I was looking at vengence racing to tune it. Or hawk motorsports in South Carolina.

I'm not too familiar with Hawk but Vengeance Racing has turned out some very powerful cars.
They offer different packages for the C5 that range from mild to wild. Since you're considering using them I would suggest you contact them. They can work with you and help you find the performance parts best suited to your goals. They can also help you plan the work out in stages if you need to do it that way.

Have you had the car tuned? That would be a good starting point.

AUTO or MANUAL??

MILEAGE??

Cant put a LS2 TB on a stock C5 Manifold UNLESS, you cut off the C5 Flange/snout and glue on a LS2 flange/snout..

LS2 on the LEFT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, LS1/6 n right:

You will also have to get a throttle wiring harness adaptor for the LS2 to work on a C5.

Your cam may be fine. Even IF you went to a BIGGGGGER CAAAAM, you will be VERY LIMITED by the limited stock air flow, low compression of the heads.

If you want to make more reliable power, you need to get a better set of heads and then most likely a little bigger injector (if they are above 88% Duty Cycle) when you are making power. Then you will need a new dyno tune.

Dart, TFS and AFR are all good heads that will help you produce good horsepower. They are also somewhat expensive.
You might try watching the C5 For Sale section. Heads often show up there. 243 heads are a step up from your stock heads (probably 241 or 853). There are also some good shops that can take your basic head and with a good CNC porting give you heads that could support at least 425-450hp. Look at Tony Mamo, AI, Texas Speed, Frankensteined.
Years ago, we used to have a bumper sticker that read, "Speed costs money! How fast do you want to go?"
Or from Tech Guru Bill Curlee: "Just like the TV Comercial says; WHATS IN YOUR WALLET???"
