what is the most effective way to keep mice from building nests in my engine?
My wife has a cat that stays in the garage... But that’s a whole other problem..lol
I would look up coyote urine pellets maybe you could place at points of entry? We had a raccoon coming in the kitty door terrorizing wife’s cat and placed some of these pellets. Seems to have kept the bully away for about a month now. Not sure if mice respond to that or not. But worth looking up. I might look for a link.
“Shake away” granular. “Mouse defense” spray. Google them and a ton of options should come up at Wally World and the website named after a river. Would post a link but I’m not sure if that’s within guidelines.

I place Bounce dryer sheets in my engine bay and interior when I store the car. I have never seen a mouse in the garage or house, but I place the sheets there just in case. Other owners report good results with the dryer sheets.
Be smarter than the mice. Find the entry points that they use to get into the garage and figure out a way to plug them up. They hate to chew through copper screen. Copper screen and some spray foam and they wont get back in to that hole.
Look on You Tube at home made mouse traps. I like the bucket with the tin can that can free roll on the wooden dowel. Works great!
Irish Spring bars all over the garage.
Ultrasonic Pest (120VAC) repellents
In the winter, I put Bounce Dryer sheets all over/under/inside the car, as well as Irish Spring bars under the hood.
There are really only two places that mice can get into our attached garage, and that is squeezing by the soft weatherstrip on either side of the big garage door. I have plastic scrubby type sponges wedged in that spot, with Irish Spring stuck behind them. That has solved my issues, so far...
...knock on wood.
My GF has adopted several outdoor/feral cats. But they are not allowed in the garage, so the mice were escaping from them in TO the garage. But the cats have definitely helped too. They leave us carcass 'presents' from time to time.

Irish Spring was debunked a while back when a member posted a picture of a bar of Irish Spring that had been half eaten by mice. I put a bag of mothballs by each tire and one under the hood.

Yeah, I saw that. But I doubt that mouse lived very long. I'll still stick with it.
I bought some fresh cab. It goes by another name that I can’t recall, but if you google fresh cab the site comes up. I have not used it but I bought some and I’m going to try it in my boat this winter.
It’s supposedly used by farmers to keep mice out of tractor cabs.

Thanks
My local Fleet Farm has it on sale for $2.99 a pouch. I will pick up a few tomorrow for this coming winter.
