Default Techron question.

Purchased some Techron fuel additive today but after I already filled the tank. The directions say to add to the tank prior to the gas. Has anyone added after topping off the tank? Car is running good just wanted to use as a preventative measure.

It is better to wait until the tanks are to about 1/4 full so when you add it it goes into both tanks. Adding when full will only put into one side not both.

I would wait until the next time you need to fill up with gas. You want to be sure that the additive is distributed to both tanks.

Put it in anyway. It won't hurt it.
Buy another bottle and put it in when you get the current tank down to empty.

My tank was 5/8 full when the gas gauge failed five years ago. I added one bottle of this magic fluid and the problem was fixed within three miles. I continue to add a bottle twice a year usually to a full tank and have never seen the problem again.

...I even run it in my '82 (crossfire injection, in tank fuel pump). My cars are not driven much; maybe three tanks of gas a year and one oil change a year so I splurge! Welcome to the C5 world!

If you are being fair to your car, you'll need to fill up within a week so just wait until then to add it.

I never thought about when to add Techron. I usually carry the bottle with me and add it after I fill up at the gas station before I leave. Maybe not the best procedure but I've not had a fuel gage problem since I started doing this.

Because of the C5 having 2 tanks and the way the system works (the passenger's emptied first), the best time to add Techron is when having less than 1/2 "tank". This will provide the most uniform mix in both tanks from the get-go.

When having less than 1/2 "tank", all the gas is in the driver's tank, so adding Techron and filling up provides the best way to assure a good mixing process in the driver's tank. Then, as the fill-up gets to the 1/2 "tank" point and continues to the full mark, the mix overflows to the passenger's tank though the crossover tube.

If Techron is added when the tank is above the 1/2 mark, most of it will remain in the driver's tank at the beginning, although eventually both tanks will tend to "homogenize" their content because gas constantly circulates between them.

For more details on how this works, check this great explanation from 8VETTE7. The following is a little fragment from it:

So effectively the passenger tank empties first and then the drivers tank empties. But keep in mind that the fuel stream to the passenger tank and the syphone back to the drivers tank continues whenever the engine is running...

Techron is a great product. Don't over use it. Put it in when tank low AND vehicle due for oil change. Add, fill tank, run low, change oil. Your welcome.

I took these pics at Carlisle - I believe they are 2 shots of the same tank. There are 2 - about 8gal each - connected by a big hose. The one pic shows "2004" on the side - I believe there are differences between these and what's in my '00...

Since there is a pump constantly siphoning fuel from the driver to passenger side, won't both tanks eventually get mixed?

Yes. Shouldn't take that long either, if the passenger side jet pump is able to keep up with max power fuel flow with some margin.

These are actually different tanks - the one on the bottom has the smaller hose that runs to the fuel neck and the other a fatter hose that connects to the other tank. Is the ‘jet pump’ in either of these?

It seems to me they are 2 sides of the same tank (driver's), as mentioned by the person who took the pictures

I use Chevron fuel as it all ready has techron in it. Never have to bother buying and adding it separately. Have had the vert for over 13 years and no problems with the fuel gauge stuff.
