I'm building a restomod with a 2001 Z06 engine. I want to buy a scan tool to monitor the engine when I start it up. Its just the engine and trans in the chassis. No body. I'd don't want to spend a lot of money (under $100.00) for the scan tool. Anyone have one they've bought and found it very useful. Thanks

For less than $100 you're not going to get more than a "code reader" !!...what on the engine do you want to monitor ??...for about $350-400 you can get a "Chinese Clone" Tech 2 GM Factory scan tool...best bet for the money !!
Pounder what were you able to do? Which did you buy?
well of course you can tune the car (I'm not there yet) I can disable the skip shift, change fan temps and when they come on,disabled the air pump system, raised the fuel shut off so if the LMC5 fails the car will still run, scan everything engine, trans etc. it's endless !!!!! Bought mine from Summit 499.00 !!!!! (8 credits)
If you are going to invest in a scan tool, look for one that has the "enhanced GM codes" as well as the standard SAE codes to read. You can also get one that will load on your PC, for a few dollars more, that can have bi-directional ability. That will allow you to change wheel size, bleed the ABS unit at the wheels, eliminate skip shift and a few other items. You are still under $200 for this ability.
What do you want to monitor? A decent cheap option is a bluetooth OBD2 dongle and phone app, but you will pretty much be limited to basic parameters like IAT, Coolant, RPM, MAP, speed, fuel trims, o2 voltage maybe.

You have a link? I didnt realize there was something that could do all that for under 200
Is there a particular reason you don’t want to run gauges? A lot of people tear out the cluster from trailblazers when doing LS swaps. Here’s my friends chevelle gauge setup:
the only thing that doesn’t work is the voltage gauge as that gets its signal from the BCM.
As I said in my original post. I’m just starting the engine in the chassis. NO body. I’m just making sure everything is good before droppingthe body. I have a dakota dash for the car but don’t want to use it till I put the nody on.

Well to be fair you didn’t really explain that you just wanted it for a brief period to check before you put the gauges on.
With that said just rent the one from Autozone. The best one has a ton of features and you get all your money back when you’re done.
