Wake up call came 2 days ago returning home from about a 100 mile ride about and the ABS/TC lights come on. And, DIC telling me, yes, stuff needs attention. At the time I was running about 60 mph , cruise control on, pretty smooth road, no traffic. Hmmmmmmm. 1st time that lit up since I resoldiered the ECBM 19,000 miles ago to get rid of the 1214 code. Got home, gonna check codes in the morning.
Come next morning, Go in garage to check codes. one code on the TC but no numbers. Hmmmmmmmmmm. One code on the right outside rearview mirror not behaving in H. Reset both and go to start car. What? Not turning over fast enough to start engine. WoW! And I'm driving about in this car several times a week to the tune of a bit over 1000 miles per month. With over 130,000 miles on the car, not a show car or garage queen for sure.
Next move, put on my large battery charger and give it a high charge for about 15 mins, Disconnect and get in to start again. Success! The grab VOM and check voltage at the battery with car running to make sure the volt meter inside the car is not lying to me. It ain't. About 14 volts with car running so charging system good.
Hmmmmm Back in the house , on the computer and look up battery for it at the local Auto Zone, Look at the prices. Wow. Call them and verify they have. Yep!
Pull battery out of car and go to AutoZone about 1/2 mile from me. She has to test my battery as store policy on core batteries. Yep! Bad Battery. New battery , Duralast 75 DLG for 175.77 out the door. Sigh.
Back home and install after making sure connects were very clean. Then, hooked up Battery Tender to it to bring to full charge. No hurry as it's raining and miserable out there.
This morning on my 3AM walk about in 70F misty rain , I check on the car and the Battery Tender showing GREEN.
But with our fine weather pattern for the rest of the week down here in SW Louisiana, I'll probably not be out in it for a few days.
The Old Battery, was installed 5 years and 1 month ago by the 1st owner ( I'm 3rd ) in Fort Worth, Texas. at a 135 bucks at a Goodyear store up there.
My story last fall....
Crappy weather in MN so car sat for a week. Tried to start..no go. Put on battery tender, not charging. Run to NAPA and get new battery. Hook up to car, still won't start. Mechanic buddy comes over and looks everything over, thinks the battery is dead...jumps the car and she fires up. Drive it up and down the street and car dies. Buddy comes out and jumps the car and I drive it back home...tells me to take the battery back to NAPA and get it tested and charged. Walked into NAPA and my friend's kid is working. He tests the battery and tell me it's a bad battery...battery should be 12.4v w/ 800+CCA....battery was testing at 12.4v with 17 CCAs. Grabs a new battery off the shelf and tests it...12.4v w/ 1000 CCA. Threw battery in the car and she fire right up. Lesson here...have NAPA/Auto Zone test the battery before you leave the story.
I was teasing the guy and gal at the store and asked them " In the rare case this battery is not good I'm gonna be sad " He told me if I had a problem with it he would come to my house with another new battery and install it for me " Course I'm in that store often with 2 four wheeler , 2 motorcycles, 2 lawn mowers , generator and power washer I gotta keep running. ;-)
