What's a reliable way to tell if my 01 had work done prior to my ownership which would exclude me needing this kit?
You may want to go to a Chevy dealership and ask if they would print a Vehicle Service History report for your VIN. GM did install a Column Lock Bypass for C5's and if it was done, it show up on the report.
I have that GM bypass on my manual trans '02 (the original owner had it done) and so far it seems to work. I've never had the column lock when it shouldn't. never got any of the DIC messages, and I can hear the lock energize when I turn the key off and remove it. BUT, I still carry the LMC5 and tools to install it just in case. The LMC5 costs around $50 and the tech support is superior!! For those that don't have this device, GET ONE

I'm way too pessimistic to buy the LMC5 and just set it aside waiting to inevitably getting stranded before installing. In the comfort of my garage it was an easy job.. laying in the floorboard in some parking lot, or gas station at night fooling with it would be MUCH different.
It only cost $40, takes at most a 1/2 hr to install by anyone who can read, and there is no other sure way to make sure this problem is solved no matter what else was done to the car, by GM or anyone else.
Isn't it true that if you experience the lockup it could be too late for the lmc5 to do anything ? That was my impression
Defeats the purpose of carrying one around.
I believe if you were to get the unlocker with the LMC5 it wouldn't matter what state of malfunction, or which dealer installed "fix" (or none) had previously been done.
The recall was never done to my car a 2003 built Nov 2002 & still functions as it should, a lot of issues have to do with battery voltage. No offense to any one here but I have no intentions of installing any bypass on mine.

Thats your decision , so who ya going to ask when you are stuck somewhere and you have a locked column. The people on this site have suggested the best advice for you because they know that this will lock up on you, your c5 isnt so special that it wont happen to you

Who would not want to gamble being stuck at midnight in a darkened place with no cell phone access?
