Looking at the rpo codes. Some indication that the value of the c5 should be more. There were for example 18k base models built. And you can also match up how many optional model were made along with optional parts. 20 plus years down the line how many of those Year specific cars are left? The value on these cars should be taking a significant rise in value what’s up with that? It’s just to underrated especially with interchangeable parts!
They made 250,000 C5s in various flavors. There are already too many people that "know what they got" and want twice what the car is worth because they feel like theirs is rare because it's 1 of 1500 made in a particular color combo with a certain option.

Too many around to be collectors' cars. IMO, values have not hit rock bottom yet, but they are leveling off.
Here's my rule of thumb for the coupes: 1997 $10k. Add $1k per year, so a 2004 about $17k. Not perfect but close. Obviously verts and Z06's are more. Even the FRC's are a bit more - some rarity value, and you can produce a Z06 look alike very easily. Personally, I don't like that style, but that's just me. Apparently Chevy did not like it either as they never made an FRC after the C5.
Not to mention time of year, and location. Values vary too much, look at what others are going for locally, say +/- a model year, and similar miles - then you know what the average is vs. high/low $.
About seven years ago when I bought a C5 vert I heard the same story. Prices were at the bottom. Since then the prices have dropped about $1,000 a year. Prices are determined by supply and demand and there are so many C5's available prices will continue to drop. As C7 prices drop when the C8 is released demand for the 20 year old C5 will drop again along with prices. Rare colors and even the precious Z06 models will all see values drop in future years.

With the lack of available parts and more becoming obsolete.. vendors will be giving up on these 20 year old cars. their value will become flat, like all the other generations.. there are always exceptions.. but in 1/4 million, chances are slim many cars will become a higher value over time.

I think like many other older cars they are going to survive on specialty wrecking yards.
That being said, there are of course a lot of things that can fail on these cars and they will continue to drive just fine.
I believe that value is about to change given the all electric program gm has implemented with full force !!!
probably won't change for a while. There are too many c5's .. and don't forget, too many c6's out there, which is basically a c5.5. There are plenty of old and rare c3 combos that go, pristine, for under $10k.
I just went through this myself... sell the car for what, $15k max, or do a refresh, probably spend twice that much, but have a car I really enjoy (guess which option I chose :-) ))
At the King of Prussia rest stop on the way to Carlisle I spoke with a C6'er outside - said he had never seen a non-Z06 FRC before. Similar story when my starter died at track day and Conte took care of it - said he'd never seen one before. But doesn't mean its going to be worth buckets of money

Perhaps they would have made more if there was demand for them when built. They had to later add additional performance parts in order to sell them.
I think ppl back then really wanted a t-top or atleast a targa at the least and I just think that’s all why demand wasn’t there maybe just a plan to re price for the z 06
I sold my C4 6 speed vert a couple of years ago and bought a C5 AE vert. People on the C4 forums were singing the same song about 'How long is it going to be before the value of my C4 goes up?' C5s and C4s are great sports cars, but you'll be a lot happier if you don't delude yourself into thinking it's an "investment." Just have fun with it, take in a car show or an autocross and enjoy the compliments you get for having such a cool car. Take comfort in the fact that you're much better off than the people who "invested" in beanie babies!
