Default Toyota Supra

Has anyone tangled with a Toyota Supra?

On the way into work this morning, in a 35MPH zone, stoplights, and half
asleep, a new looking Supra came along side and jumped on it before I even
woke up. Rather dumb on A1A in Cocoa Beach during the rush hour traffic
going into the Cape. But it did seem to go rather well, and sounded like a
very fast motorcycle. I have only had my Z for two months and no one has
tried anything more than a friendly wave yet. So I was asleep at the
switch.

By the time I got into work I was really starting to wonder just what the Z
would do against the Supra.

You'd smoke it....especially if you get the shifts just right on. Someone had posted an experience with a TT Supra just today too (somewhere in Texas). PM me and I'll give you the link.

As a former Supra owner..

Stock -vs- stock...the 02+ Z would easily give him heartburn...by a full second in the 1320.

Now..with the basic mods (BPUs as those guys call em)..it would be a good race..but WE enjoy being able to launch..and instant-on torque into each gear shift.

Quote me: "As a former Supra owner, theres no comparison..I dont need anything but my Z to put a smile on my face anymore."

Hi

I live in the Rockledge, Viera area and I own both cars. On a hot summer night the best mph I have run at bithlo is 115 in my Supra With the nice cold weather we are getting the best I have run in my 02 Z06 is 114. From a roll my Supra would pull the vette.

Ok..so you list only trap speeds. Traps dont win anything. E/Ts do.

Second, you dont list any modifications to either car.

I dont see any factual comparison between your 2 cars...but if you want to flesh it out a little (a lot)..it would help.

Stay away from the Supra! I've seen modified ones that are really fast. I saw one on the net somewhere down in Texas, Dallas area, that was around 700rwhp, and a street car. Another local one was 10 secs fairly easy. It appears they are easy to modify, so beware...

My mods are downpipe, exhaust, airfilter, raised my boost, and frontmount intercooler. I do usually run about 5 gallons of race gas in the supra on track nights. These are the basic mods that most Supra owner have and a good chance the Supra he was taking about has. My Z06 is stock.

I have run the best of 12.50 with both cars at bithlo orlando but my traps being higher in the Supra. I can sixty foot 1.9 in the Z06, 2.0 in the supra. If both cars were running bfg drag tires or nittos I feel pretty sure the Supra would pull a better time.

The biggest problam I have with my Supra is wheel spin in first and second.

There are some talented young guys building these supras in orlando I've seen them dyno 761rwhp on one and they tell me they've gotten well over 800. This is with stock lower ends apparently the supras have up to 100psi oil pressure and they have never had lower end problems. However, as you can imagine they have no traction in street trim and running slicks typically find the drive trains all over the ground. Running 10's is not a problem for these guys when they get them to hook up. On another note these cars are surprisingly heavy most in the 3600 to 3800 lb range i'm told. So don't take them for granted you don't know what they may have, but even if they have a 1000hp, I like my coupe.

I've seen a dyno graph of a Supra putting down almost 800 hp when I was dynoing my Buick and its lowly 403 rwhp and 545 rwtq.

10 second supras are rare, but they do exist. I witnessed two very fast Supras run each other one night.

Ya know what though, what I'm scared of isn't some Toyota Supra, it's those whining, insanely turbo charged 86/87 Buick Regals:)

In addition to fast cars such as LPE TT's and LGM race cars rolling around...You have to be careful in Dallas. One night, the Horsepower Store's WS-6 (something like 625 hp 8psi ATI procharger) rolled up next to me at a light when I was in my Z06. I knew it was over before it began. I saw a cage, heard a super charger and didn't even want to play. I just gave him the thumbs up. Myself and my little 360 rear wheel HP Z06 didn't stand a chance....

stock vs. stock, it's not much of a race... but there aren't many stock supras anymore, most are somewhat modified.. at least BPU (intake, exhaust, dp, 20psi boost) with this, they are around 400hp at the wheels. This would easily give a Z06 a run for its money. Most BPU supras trap 116-120mph in the 1/4 so from a roll, it won't be much of a contest. From a stop, I think the Z could maintain its' lead for quite a distance before the boost has a chance to make up the distance. It's always a good race though, I've had a couple supras so I know them pretty well and my buddy has a Z06, the brute acceleration of the Z is amazing but the topend on a twin turbo sup is nothing to laugh at.

I ran into one of these on the street. I was minding my own affair when this very plain looking car pulls up beside me. I didn't even look over. The young dude gives it a rev and I hear the whistle. I look up and the only thing identifying the type of car is the Buick hood emblem. I know these cars are fast. Long story short(since this isn't the kill section), I took him by about 2 cars to the middle of third and shut down. We talked at the next light. Very cool young man in a very cool car. I love the sleeper status of these things. Just a mid 80s coupe.....right?????!!!!!

As most have said, it really depends on how modified the Supra is. But I will add this - all in all, Supras are not fast for the amount of HP they make. Now read what I said properly - they can be VERY fast, but they are not fast compared to their HP numbers.

I have several friends that have pumped up Supras. When they were in BPU mode, they were making around 430 RWHP, but they could only manage mid to low 12's out of them around 118 MPH. MANY stock Z06's owned by fellow forum members run very low 12's at 115 - 116 MPH (with a few even in the 117+ range) with way less RWHP.

I agree with you completely on this point. They pack an extra 300-400 lbs compared to a Z06 and the Z06 will obliterate almost any Supra 0-60 mph. But for the full 1/4 or from a roll, LOOK OUT. While it may take about 400 to 450 rwhp for Supras to compete with a stock Z06, a bunch of those cars are running 500rwhp on street fuel and 700-800 rwhp on race fuel. Only TT Vettes or Z06s with 150 shots can compete with those guys. A couple of the big engine ZR1s are also lengendary Supra slayers but they run 550 rwhp on motor alone (like Limey on the CF) and many of them have another 50-150 shot on top of that.

Supras, Vipers and 911 GT2s are some of the only cars out there that can really cause us heartburn...

plus, they are very difficult to launch... any 60foot below 2.0 is a reason to start cheering.

Hi all

They are very hard to 60'. In my Z06 I can hit 2.0 with out any effort and if I try really hard and want to abuse my clutch a little I will hit 1.9. In my supra you really have to abuse the clutch, but also I have some pretty bad tires for drag racing in the Supra. Conti 295-30-18

Supras are definitely bad machines. The thing I respect most abou them is thier inherent strength. Toyota equiped the bottom end to handle serious power... I think dollar for dollar they offer the most bang for the buck in a used car...

That said they are porky and I don't like the way they look :smash:

Always assume the worst. Finding a stock Turbo Supra is about like finding a stock LX 5.0 notchback. They simply don't exist in most cases.

Stock vs stock money is on the Z06.

A BPU+ Supra is a good race for a Z06. I have raced a 98 Automatic BPU+ with gas. I pulled him by 1-1.5 before he sprayed. After that he had me by about 2.

Big singles can make 600-1000HP. Very bad animals...
