Default Hatch will open, but only one side will close

While I see many posts on here, with people saying their hatch won't open, I'm having the opposite problem with my 2000 Dark Bowling Green coupe.

The hatch always opens as it should. However, when I try to close it (with the windows down or just the doors open, 1 of 3 things will happen:

1. Only the driver side of the hatch will close
2. Only the passenger side will close
3. The hatch will bounce back up if I try to close it.

I have tried pulling the cables in the hatch floor. Plus, I find myself trying different combinations of trying to close the hatch with 1 door open, the car running, both doors open with the key in the on position, etc.

Does anyone have an idea as to why the hatch will bounce or why only 1 side will close, even with the windows down?

If the top is up try closing the drivers door quickly after the trunklid pops up.

I just installed mine tonight on my 02 vert. Stabilus part number is SG430020. The tonneau cover struts if you decide to do them also are a different part number as they are about 1inch shorter. Stabilus number SG430019. BTW now that the trunk struts are installed, it pops up about 2inches which is more than enough room to reach in and lift it. Also there is no need to climb in the trunk for either of these projects. I used a mirror and led flashlight and repair was a breeze, took less than 10 minutes to complete.
