Default C5 "udder" cleaning

Hi All,
I've been seeing some videos on YouTube on cleaning out the "udders" on a C5.Just wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to do it,if it's really necessary, how often it should be done.Stuff like that.

Thanks in advance for your replies,
Mike

Yep, 2 on the drivers side and one on the passengers side. The one on the passenger's side is the difficult one. I take out the battery for access but others remove the right tire and open up the access panel to gain access. The drivers side just reach down and you will feel them, rubber. Also, while you are doing the cleaning of the utters, also clean the AC drip hose. Attached are 2 docs on the cleanings.

I do mine every Spring. Not difficult unless you have big hands.

It's... shall we say.... udderly necessary.

I've seen some people just cut the bottom out of them so they drain easier/better, too.

I would clean them out at a minimum of once a year. You would be surprised how much junk gets funneled down into the udders.

Come to think of it, why not just cut them and call it a day? There has to be reason they are designed the way they are.

The ends of the drain tubes are made as they are to keep water, trash, debris from driving from blowing up into them... and to deter insects from building their dirty little mud homes in them.... and spiders.... lets not forget spiders.... ewwwwww

After I bought my car in April I checked the udders that first weekend. It was a Florida car and all 3 on the drivers side were plugged solid. I did cut the ends open a little bit more to allow debris to pass through a little more easily. Still haven't checked the passenger side one yet.

I had mine plugged from neighbors stupid oak tree spinners….killed my motor with water buildup. Cut them next and still the motor died again as the udder lip still too high to motor. Finally just ripped them out on driver side only and all is well even in heavy rain today in fact…don’t see the udder need 😂 and I don’t worry about mice etc. Just rip them out.

I suppose if the car sits for long periods, this could be a concern.

Mine certainly doesn't. lol

It really depends on where you park it. If garaged.....they will be as clean as the first time you cleaned them. Not a waste of time.....if they get clogged, you wind up with water inside cabin.

If you never leave the car outside, or if you never drive it in the rain then there is no need at all to clean them. If it's stored outside with no cover, you need to clean them at least twice a year. My car is garage kept, but I park it outside at work sometimes. I'm going to be checking the udders when I clean it this weekend.

I was thinking there was 3 different length ones on the driver's side??? You are correct about one behind the battery, it's a longer tube. It's been a LONG time since I've cleaned them as my C5s are stored indoors.

rrwirsi, thanks again for your help and sending those documents.I was able to empty the udders, however, try as I did,I still couldn't locate the AC drain tube. I believe you stated that it is on the firewall behind the passenger side "valve cover"? Even with the battery removed I still didn't locate it.Guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Mike

It's kind of hard to find, but it's under there. Battery removal I don't think will help too much - it's closer to the block. I can try and take a good photo this afternoon when I get off work.

Well,I got the udders out and emptied. They weren't too hard to get out.The 3rd one behind the 2 on the driver's side,I was able to open and empty without taking it off. However,I couldn't locate the AC drain tube to check that one.Fellow member rrwirsi told me that it is on the firewall but I couldn't find it.I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Mucho Thanks to all who responded to my post!,
