AGM battery help please
#41
Ok, so after reading all the posts about batteries, I was more confused than when I first started reading.
So this morning I just went to Auto Zone and purchased an Optima Yellow top. I called Optima tech support and that is what they suggested for my 98. I guess I'll live with that until it fails. Hopefully not for a long time.

I went with an AC Delco group 34 AGM for my 65 through Summit Racing recently. Delivered to my door with no shipping charge for about $165. And no core required. I have purchased 3 for various vehicles so far - all with good results. No doubt they have the correct group size for your car as well...

I recently bought An Optima "Red Top" , based on this forum recommendations. I'll keep the "Yellow Top" battery in mind if I have problems with this one. So far, it's a great battery as advertised. Time will tell. Thanks for the info.

I had an Optima Red Top in my Superformance Cobra that may have been 15 years old when it finally failed. That's a lot of service! When it did go, it was sudden...and I have heard that to be true about them. I didn't buy another though (went with an AC Delco instead) as I was not convinced of the value...or that another would provide as much service.
I think a lot of battery longevity is the result of regular use of a premium battery maintainer. Recently, I replace a traditional lead/acid battery at 12+ year old. Regular care can be beneficial!

Melting Slicks
I don't expect a car battery to last more than 5-6 years. My 2001 C-5 has had Optima "red tops" in it since 2002, when the first round of "leakage scares" occurred, with the OE Delco batteries. Every 5-6 years, I buy a new red top and either put the old one in my "winter beater", or give it to a friend. But FWIW, I've never had an issue with any of the Optimas........

...with a 62 Ahr rating as well. That is very nice battery, but somewhat expensive too.
Not sure of the year that the OP has, but a 1997-03 can use a group 78 side post AGM battery.
1997-00 came from the factory with Group 78 wet cell battery (can be upgraded to Group 78 AGM)
2001-03 came from the factory with Group 75 AGM battery (can be upgraded to Group 78 AGM)
2004 came with a top post Group 86AGM wet cell battery (same size as Group 75) (but it can be upgraded to a Group 34 AGM)
Group 78 battery is 10-1/4" L x 7-1/16" W x 7-5/16" H
Group 75/86 battery is 9-1/16" L x 7-1/16" W x 7-5/16" H
Group 34 battery is 10-1/4" L x 6-13/16" W x 7-7/8" H
