Long ago I had my trucks windshield tinted and looking back it was not worth it. Not only is it illegal but it could open you up to some legal impactions if you were to cause or be in a accident. Like anything in life it is up to you to decide what you are willing to risk.
I would never do it however a friend in Michigan did it to his hellkitten, peeled it back off in a week after being pulled twice and not being able to see **** at night. Here in Florida I have not done the Vette yet however I did do my Grand Cherokee with 15% on the front door glass, 5% on the rest and clear on the W/S, all done in IR blocking ceramic film. The difference in interior temps was hard to believe, it made that much of a difference. I do plan on the same treatment to the Vette based on how well the IR film works on the Jeep.
It really does depend on what film you get. Not all tint is dark.
^^ I meant I would never go dark or even medium tint on the W/S, my night vision already sucks. I actually like to see where I am going hence the clear on the W/S of my ride.
Please no tint friend... GM headlights on the C5 are bad units as it is and were unexceptable from the start of the production run in 97... The danger continues now, the light will never improve !!... imagine attempting to see and drive safely with C5's horrible headlights and then place a windshield tint over that! The General has already compromised the ability to drive the C5 at night!!... I am disturbingly cognizant of the medical ramifications of GM's poor ability to provide Barely adequate light for the One Hundred Mile an Hour sports car (100 mph) and with such a blatantly disregarded cry for some help!... from hundreds of thousands of customers of this General Motors Corvette.... And then one wants to add tint to the DANGER...nono No tint! 🤨
I went with Llumar Air80 ceramic on my windshield several years back - zero regrets! It definitely lets in less heat and makes driving the car on hot sunny days more enjoyable. In my case I didn't experience any degradation in forward vision during day or night. Granted I have quite good headlights and I'm probably on the younger end of the C5 owner spectrum (with excellent uncorrected vision).
Just get a clear ceramic "tint" with the higher UV reflection value. Will make a noticeable difference.
This is what I did on my Lexus. No way in Hell I'd fully tint a windshield.
I'd suggest you drive around at night with dark sunglasses to get a feel of what it will be like.
I grew up in Fla and back in the mid 80s I used "5%". It helped a lot in the heat but it was honestly too dark to function at night.
Now-a-days I run ceramic 35% on the family car and its incredible how well it cuts down on heat inside our large 6 pass sedan.
As for the windshield I've done both and IMO its a bad idea. You really shouldn't cause the LEO's to question you when approaching.
My 04Z came w/something in the area of 40-50% and I don't know if its ceramic. I'm considering having it changed to 20% ceramic and leaving the windshield alone.
My stock windshield has the factory tint.
The other windows are dark. Cabin is
pretty cool for Florida. I would say no ,to
aftermarket tint on the windshield. You want
night vision and the tint, would not help.
I'm not sure on the percentage, but I had UV protective film applied to the windshields of both my C5 convertible and my C7 Z06. There is barely any change in the tint or color as compared to the side and rear windows which are tinted at the FL legal limit. The shop that applied the tint indicated it's purpose is to reflect UV and help keep the cabin cool considering the windshield is the largest glass surface. No problem with night time visibility, HUD visibility, and the interiors do stay less hot (won't say cooler in FL) than without it.
Here's a good and recent picture from last week when it was in the shop getting the post coil-over alignment that shows the clarity and comparison with the passenger window closed and the driver window open as well as a pic with the top down.
I appreciate everyone’s comments. Thank you for the input. So I decided to do ceramic tinting. I think they did a phenomenal job and I haven’t had any issues driving at night. It was only $100 for 50% tint. The two side windows and the rear hatch window was done about two years ago that’s regular tint at I believe 25%. I am very happy with the ceramic tint on the windshield.
