This is a book when you read the story it may be about the Corvette. But when you read consider this is how GM operated in all divisions and on most models. The Corvette here just adds to the topic but the book exposes how GM was in massive decline and how the management really did little to right the ship.
They were building many Grand Prix Pontiacs around this time and they were not selling. Why were they building them? it was cheaper to build them than pay the union workers to stay home and still collect a majority of their pay due to a bad contract. The cars were dumped at a loss on rental fleets. And yes my resale went in the tank.
They like to say GM it too big to fail and the truth is they were so big they failed. The bail out go them right sized and it also helped eliminate many of the bad culture that was involved.
My great Uncle was a big shot at GM for many decades. He was old school and it worked in his time but as the 60's and 70's arrived GM never reacted well or as fast as needed to the market changes.
Today they still have many issues being tossed at them but they are dealing with them much better. Yes the truck engine deal but if you look most automakers are having engine issues mostly due to trying squeeze more MPG and supplier issues. The roll back of government regulations has helped but it may not last forever. This is why EV is not on the front burner but it is not going to go away. One election and we could be back to where we were.
Anyways read this book and think about this on a GM scale and it will make you understand that GM did not just fail in 2008 but they failed over 3-4 decades as to when the decline started.

One of the mules that was in the Mid America collection was auctioned off at Mecum Kissimmee last month. I read the book right after the release. The author had to wait until the official unveiling before the book could be sold.
I do wonder if the book could possibly be made into a film such as Ford V Ferrari - or if it would be better suited as a limited series on Netflix or something similar? Would love to see our cars on the big screen if done properly. Haven't read the book however its on my list of things i would do.
