I am realizing that my 2003 Z doesn't have the headroom that my 2001 Z had.
I am 6' 3+ and had no headroom problem in my 2001.
It's that darn weird pad across the back of the headliner that they added for 2003. It gives you a great new hairstyle too!
Has anyone else dealt with this?
Perhaps replacing the '03 headliner with an earlier year's would remedy. If anyone has already done this, please do tell. This would seem like the quickest fix.
I am 6'4" and unless you are wearing a beehive hair bouffant, I can not grasp where your problem is coming from. You need to adjust the seat back down, front up until you are happy with the feel, but I have no problem with headroom or any other space in the 03 Z06 I bought. Seat adjustment and hairstyle hope you can find a barber.
Headliner may have been increased for improved safety. You should be able to swap it for an 01 headliner if you can find one. I would ask Bob at Fitchner or you could have your car modified like the popemobile. :)
I have noticed that it's not just the headliner but the seats are sitting a bit higher than my 02. The 03 is in fact, sitting in the seat pushing me up a bit from my last years Z06 02 vette for sure.
I think the seat's padding and leather are improved as well.
Good luck, or you better duck!
But I am 6'2", and I have no problem. I have the seat all the way down & all the way back.
:iagree:
I'm 6'3" and have NO problems with the headliner or the seats. I have the seat all the way down and all the way back, with it leaning one stop back from normal.
See my thread about modifying the bumpstop on the seat in the C5 tech/general section (forget which one). I am 6'4. The difference was tiny, and not really noticable, BUT I have never hit my head since I made the change. I still need to go lower, I will never be able to fit in the car with a helmet. Luckily I keep my hair at stubble-level - otherwise I'd have a nice flat haircut too. Fact is, these cars don't have a lot of headroom. I have a 99 too, with I guess the 'thinner' headliner. If I can't get the seat low enough, I may think about removing the headliner altogether, and just putting some thin material up there to look nice (no padding). Don't know how thick the headliner is in the first place.
I also removed my visors so I could actually see the road.
Re: i'm 6'6"..does 2001 have most headroom of all??? (thatsmytoy)
Bill,
I'm 6'5"+ and fit into the Z06 and Coupe just fine!
The only time my head hits the headliner or hoop (targa bar on the Coupe) is when I'm wearing a helmet.
If your torso is proportionally taller than your lower half, you might have a clearance problem though.
I'm 6'2" and the only time I have real problems with headroom is when I have a helmet on or when I run the seat all the way back. Since I started tracking, I am no longer comfortable driving without having my seat forward a lot more than I used to have (more control). I also happily noticed that I get more vertical room in the car that way as well, gauged by the "hair rubs and gets all static electricity from it" versus "hair not touching" meter, without having to lean the seat back.
I was reading the Corvette Black Book and noticed the following which I believe answers your question:
2003 Model Year
"To meet stricter standards for occupant protection, Z06 hardtop headliners were thicker. Also, interior areas at the A-pillars for all models and B-pillars for coupes and Z06 hardtops were modified."
So you were correct there is a structural change that reduces the headroom at certain places in the cockpit

I am only 6ft. and usually don't have a problem on the street, but at the track with my helmet I have yet to find a comfortable position in which my helmet is not pressed against the liner.
Strange, I am 6'3.5' and fit great. I track a lot and have no problem with the helmet (I have an Arai). Maybe the headroom is like the lowering on these cars, each is slightly different...

I think you are ok in 2002 - the headliner in my 1999 was fine too. The back portion of the 03's now had a much lower head liner.
What a difference an inch and a half makes. The tale finally ends.
Great news for us tall guys. The 2002 headliner fits in the 2003. I finally received my new 2002 headliner from the dealer and put it in my 2003. It fits perfect, costs less than $100 and took 45 minutes to put in. For now, the visors will stay out. Visibility is excellent and no more ceiling buff. Very nice.
If you want to try this just be sure to first remove as much of the surrounding interior trim as possible – mostly to make R&R easier and to prevent the trim pieces from getting scored by the edge of the headliner. (Watch the windshield pillars-pull them first) The visors and seatbelts will need to come off.
