well the other day i was on the freeway going on a ramp wich merges to another freeway....as i was on it i hear honking i look in my rearview mirror and i see two round lights so close to my butt i thought they were infront of me..at first i gradually stepped on the gas but at 85 on the ramp he still was very close...so then i just punched it to see if this guy had what it takes to keep up...at 110 on the ramp he still was on my butt...(the z is able to go faster but i can't if you now what i mean...especially on a turn) we just merged on the freeway and am now at about 125 still on my butt....so i just say forget this i changed lanes and continued at 125. all of a sudden i see a porche come up to my left and a guy from inside first waves hi then waves goodbuy.....and punches is...when he goes by i see the turbo in the middle...and say hey what other chance will i have? so i punch it and instantly catch up..now it was the other way around i was up on his butt...and you know what he couldn't shake me..at all at one point i was even gaining on him at around 140.i stayed on his butt until i saw the hud read 162 and just realized that this is ridiculous.. i have nothing more to prove and these speeds are dangerous. i slowly let of the gas and he continued on....i am not proud of my self for what i did...but i sure do feel better knowing that i can stay with a 150k car....noticed i said I...i already knew the z could but wasn't sure i had it in me.....
I don't know where you live/were in California, but I'm in Orange County and had a similar run in with a black 996 twin turbo about a week or so ago. We started at a traffic light and quickly merged onto a toll road. The Z06 held its own in first and second. But the Porsche definitely had an advantage once I had to go to 3rd. As we passed 100, I figured it just wasn't worth my license on a road that is usually just crawling with CHiPs. I come up against a lot of pretty bad butt cars in So Cal, but this twin turbo was by far the fastest I personally had ever seen on the road. A very, very fast car. But, as you correctly indicate, we're pretty close and saved over $100K to boot. And the real kicker is that I'm bone stock. If I wanted to, I'm pretty sure that I could spend a lot less than $100K in mods and be right there with it, if not better.
I was out for a drive on Sunday on one of the many smooth and straight freeways around Phoenix (80), and ended up racing a modded yellow Carerra 4S (GT body kit, massive wheels and tires, exhaust, custom graphics and whatever else). The 4S has 320 factory hp, and whilst it's a beautiful car, was simply no match for my Z. I glanced at my HUD at one point and I was doing 155mph...with him at this point well behind me. We both took the same exit, and had a chance to mix it up at much slower speeds. Once again, his car was no match for mine. The 4S ain't no 996TT, but with the mods he had done, it was about twice the price of my car. I imagine he is still at home licking his wounds.... :D These are great cars!!
Good run, alot of my friends have 911 turbos, its amazing how close in performance my z06 and viper ACR were to their 911 turbos....all are truely awesome and capable cars.
I'll be lookin for him. I work in the edison building, down from john wayne! :yesnod:
Small, small world!!! I work in the building right next door! I'm looking at your building right now? I'm in the Northwestern Mutual Building. Is that your EB Z06 that I've seen in the parking structure a few times? We should grab a drink at Il Fornaio some time. E-mail me if your interested. BTW, where the heck did you do 150 around here????
Nothing like paying $40 bucks for a sandwhich! Gotta love irvine. I actually park in the 2nd structure on the bottom floor. Silver Z hammered on 19/20" motorsports. Let me know when you want to meet up and we'll talk shop.

Mike
Silver here too. I'd like to see those 19/20"s. I'm thinking about doing something like that too. I'm around all next week. Just shoot me at e-mail at moneill@mwe.com. I'd look forward to meeting you.
Wow what a race if you look at the Z06 numbers and the 996TT they are pretty close in acceleration....But i think you made the right move and not continue in the race....
The 996TT has a higher top speed 190 mph than the Z mainly because of its taller gear.....You would have stayed in his butt until 170 after that the 911 would have pulled away from you.....
And the real kicker is that I'm bone stock. If I wanted to, I'm pretty sure that I could spend a lot less than $100K in mods and be right there with it, if not better.
Oh, a lot less than that! With just an intake, headers, x-pipe, and cat-back exhaust (combined good for another 30-40hp), you'd be able to lunch a stock 996 turbo. Total bill for that is about $3k-4k installed, less if you do it yourself.
I hate stock vs. modded arguments, but nonethless this proves the Z06 blows a 996 turbo out of the water in performance for the buck, stock or modded. For the price of a 996 turbo, you could almost have a Lingenfelter 427 TT. :D
BTW, I know which toll road you're talking about :D ;) Good decision to back off. :yesnod:
